Sometimes, a beloved character can overshadow weaknesses in a story. If a character is particularly charming, memorable, funny, or moving, fans might not notice or care about plot problems. This isn’t always a bad thing – a strong character can elevate a show or book. However, trouble arises when the story starts changing just to please fans of that character.
Often, when a character becomes incredibly popular, the story starts to avoid giving them real challenges. This can disrupt the dynamics between characters and make the story’s flaws more noticeable. Ironically, the character everyone loves can end up highlighting exactly what’s not working in the writing.
Naruto Tries to Completely Clean Up the Mess Around Itachi
Itachi is a remarkably memorable character, largely due to his tragic backstory, enigmatic personality, and intelligence. He’s designed to leave a lasting impression on viewers. However, the story runs into trouble when it tries too hard to portray him as secretly good and incredibly wise. The more Naruto attempts to redeem him, painting him as almost saintly despite his dark actions, the more forced and unnatural the writing becomes.
Despite his terrible actions, the story focuses so much on portraying Itachi as a noble figure that it downplays the full extent of his wrongdoing. This creates a persistent conflict. Itachi is most compelling when presented as someone deeply damaged, manipulative, and forced to make awful choices. The story loses some of its impact when it tries too hard to present him as a brilliant, tragic hero who needs to be seen in the best possible light.
Darling in the Franxx Leans Too Hard on Zero Two
Zero Two is the most recognizable and popular character in Darling in the Franxx, becoming central to the show’s identity from the start. However, this popularity creates a problem for the writing. As the anime relies more and more on Zero Two’s appeal, other characters and plotlines feel less developed in comparison.
As the series goes on, the supporting characters become less impactful and the world itself feels less interesting. The show’s grander themes often take a backseat to Zero Two’s personal struggles. Her overwhelming popularity highlights how underdeveloped everything else in the anime is. While Zero Two remains a key reason people are watching Darling in the Franxx, it also makes the story’s uneven focus all the more apparent.
Escanor Exposes How Weak the Writing in The Seven Deadly Sins Really Is
Escanor is a hugely popular character because he’s incredibly strong and instantly commands attention whenever he appears. The anime The Seven Deadly Sins often relies on him to create exciting moments, and he does so very effectively. However, his popularity also highlights a major flaw in the series: The Seven Deadly Sins has consistently struggled to maintain a consistent power level among characters, create logical power increases, and establish clear rules for battles.
Escanor doesn’t cause the show’s issues, but he definitely draws attention to them. As his incredible power becomes a major highlight, the series increasingly prioritizes spectacular moments over building genuine suspense. While Escanor is a really enjoyable character, relying on him too much reveals that the story wasn’t as well-developed as it initially seemed.
Nezuko Kamado Hardly Ever Gets to Feel Fully Written
Nezuko is a hugely popular character in Demon Slayer, and it’s clear why. She’s the heart of the story, consistently shown as evidence that even within a monstrous form, humanity can endure. However, despite her importance, Nezuko isn’t developed as a character as much as she could be. The anime wants us to deeply care for her, but often doesn’t give her the opportunity to truly function as a fully realized individual.
Nezuko is frequently portrayed as quiet, responding to events rather than driving them, and often feels more like a symbol than a fully developed character with her own thoughts and feelings. The show asks her to convey strong emotions, but doesn’t give her much opportunity to act independently. This creates a noticeable problem with her characterization. Despite this, she remains a fan favorite, highlighting a key weakness in Demon Slayer‘s storytelling.
Jujutsu Kaisen Keeps Writing Around Gojo
Gojo Satoru is a charismatic and incredibly powerful character who instantly makes Jujutsu Kaisen more fun to watch. While his presence is a huge asset to the anime, it also creates a problem. Because he’s so overwhelmingly strong within the show’s rules, he often defuses tense situations and makes challenges feel too easily overcome whenever he gets involved.
Honestly, one of the biggest issues I see is how often the plot has to contort itself just to explain why Gojo isn’t involved, or how he’s being held back. That always feels like a red flag to me. He’s such a blast to watch and incredibly powerful, but it often feels like Jujutsu Kaisen has to do double duty when he’s on screen – giving fans the awesome Gojo content we want, and making sure he doesn’t accidentally derail the entire storyline. It’s a tricky balance!
My Hero Academia Never Fully Faces What Made Bakugo So Difficult
Bakugo is a surprisingly popular character in My Hero Academia, even though he can be abrasive. Viewers enjoy his drive to win and how the story slowly shows a more vulnerable and complex side to him, hidden beneath his tough exterior. However, the series sometimes focuses more on how Bakugo changes than on the serious consequences of his earlier actions. He plays a key role in Deku’s development and helps explore important themes like competition, natural ability, and believing in yourself.
The story feels strangely unwilling to fully acknowledge just how cruel Bakugo was allowed to be. While the anime wants us to root for his growth, it sometimes feels rushed and convenient for the plot. Because Bakugo is so popular and important to the story, it often seems like the narrative prioritizes protecting the idea of his redemption over truly showing the consequences of his past actions and the harm he caused.
Killua Zoldyck Quietly Exposes Hunter x Hunter’s Main Character Problem
Killua is a hugely popular anime character, and it’s easy to see why. His complicated family history creates compelling drama, his bond with Gon is deeply meaningful, and his personal development feels very real – something many action-focused anime characters lack. Interestingly, Hunter x Hunter portrays Killua so effectively that it unintentionally highlights a flaw with Gon, who often feels less compelling in comparison.
While Gon is still important to the story and used effectively, Killua often feels like a more complex and engaging character. This creates a bit of a problem: the most popular character ends up feeling like the true lead, highlighting that the official protagonist isn’t always the most compelling focus. If fans consistently find another character more interesting, the story essentially has a protagonist issue, even if it doesn’t realize it.
Levi Ackerman Sometimes Feels Safer Than Attack on Titan Wants to Admit
Levi’s popularity comes from his incredible efficiency, strong will, and competence, even though he’s emotionally distant. In a world filled with fear and loss, he stands out as someone who can bring order through sheer determination, which makes him a beloved character. However, this strength also presents a challenge for the story. Attack on Titan is meant to be a harsh, chaotic, and unforgiving world, and Levi’s ability to control situations can sometimes clash with that core theme.
Despite facing hardship, Levi often feels more like an untouchable icon than a truly vulnerable character. There’s a sense that the story shields him, almost as if it can’t allow its most compelling figure to fully break down. He sometimes feels a bit too protected, as if he doesn’t quite experience the same risks and consequences as other characters.
