Apple TV+ is preparing a new science fiction series that will be much larger in scope and ambition than its predecessors, like Dark Matter and Silo. Sci-fi television has become increasingly ambitious over the years. Shows such as Star Trek: The Next Generation were groundbreaking for their time in the 1990s, stretching the limits of what was possible with network budgets, and paved the way for later series like Stargate, Farscape, and the reimagined Battlestar Galactica.
While classic science fiction aimed to explore big ideas, newer shows like Dune: Prophecy, Foundation, Arcane, Westworld, and Stranger Things are creating incredibly detailed and expansive worlds with massive budgets. Given this trend, it’s fitting that Apple TV+’s new sci-fi noir series is their most ambitious science fiction project to date.
The new show Neuromancer is based on William Gibson’s influential 1984 novel of the same name, and has been in development for many years. Along with Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Neuromancer helped establish the cyberpunk genre in the 1980s. The story follows Case, a hacker who is blocked from accessing cyberspace – known as “The Matrix” – after being caught stealing from a dangerous employer.
Neuromancer Will Be Even More Ambitious Than Silo and Dark Matter
Case, a morally ambiguous character reminiscent of classic film noir heroes, receives an irresistible offer from the alluring and dangerous Molly, a “razorgirl.” If he agrees to join her team and assist in a daring robbery, she promises him access to the Matrix. It’s no surprise that Neuromancer heavily influenced The Matrix trilogy, and continues to inspire countless science fiction films and television shows even today.
Gibson’s Neuromancer is known for immediately throwing readers into its complex world, where the lines between the virtual and real are often unclear, and it doesn’t offer much explanation upfront. This made it a difficult but ultimately captivating read when it first came out, quickly gaining a devoted following. Now, the upcoming Apple TV show based on the book promises to be even more expansive in its themes and ideas than other sci-fi series on the platform, like Silo and Dark Matter, thanks to this ambitious world-building.
Neuromancer Can Be Apple TV’s Best Sci-Fi Adaptation Yet (& That’s Saying Something)
Apple TV+’s series Dark Matter, based on Blake Crouch’s novel, is well-made, and it’s helpful that the story begins in a world that feels real. The show quickly introduces alternate realities, but only after establishing a familiar setting. Likewise, Silo, despite taking place entirely within a massive underground structure, immediately clarifies the limits of the story’s world for viewers.
Unlike other science fiction, Neuromancer immediately throws readers into a vibrant and strange world filled with unique characters and mind-bending ideas. It mixes classic sci-fi themes with the experimental, dreamlike writing style of William S. Burroughs. This creates a world that feels both believable and completely alien, which will be difficult to capture in a movie adaptation.
If the upcoming show captures the complex and unique writing style of the Neuromancer novel, it could be Apple TV+’s most captivating sci-fi series yet. Unlike shows like Dark Matter, which have a familiar ‘real world’ to return to, and Silo, which centers around a single location, Neuromancer promises a completely unbound and mind-bending experience, even for those already familiar with the book.
