A new character class in Dungeons & Dragons is generating excitement – and possibly imbalance – in the game. Wizards of the Coast has officially announced the next major update to the ruleset will be called 5.5e, signaling a strong future for the tabletop RPG. The company plans to release three new books: Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, and two books in the Arcana Unleashed series, with these additions scheduled for release as part of the 2026 plan for Dungeons & Dragons.
Besides the major expansion planned for later this year – which Wizards of the Coast hasn’t officially revealed yet – the company is also running several playtests that hint at upcoming content. Just recently, they released four free character class options through their Unearthed Arcana program, letting players try them out and share their thoughts.
Warrior Of Venom Monk Subclass Arrives In D&D Soon
The Subclass Is Currently In Unearthed Arcana Playtests
Recently, D&D Beyond playtests introduced three new subclasses for Dungeons & Dragons, adding to the four options released in April. One of these is the Warrior of Venom for Monks. Because it’s still being tested, it might not appear in official materials for some time, but based on how quickly playtest content has been released lately, it could be available by 2027.
Wizards of the Coast tested the College of Spirits Bard for D&D last year, and it’s now officially included in the upcoming Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, which will be released in June. While playtest content doesn’t always make it into the final product, there’s a good chance the Warrior of Venom subclass could be released soon as well.
New Monk Subclass Has A Powerful Free Debuff Ability
Slowing Toxin Is Basically A Free Guaranteed Slow Spell
What really stands out about this new Monk subclass in D&D is its level 3 ability, Envenom Weapon. For just one Focus Point, the Monk can coat their weapon with a toxin. Whenever they hit an enemy with that weapon, the player can choose to apply one of two effects. The first, called Venom, adds extra Poison damage – specifically, damage equal to two rolls of the Monk’s Martial Arts die.
But the most powerful effect is called Slowing Toxin. It reduces the creature’s speed by half until your next turn, prevents it from reacting, and forces it to choose between taking an Action or a Bonus action – it can’t do both. This is similar to the effect of the Slow spell, but achieved through the Warrior of Venom Feat. Importantly, the creature doesn’t get a chance to resist this effect with a saving throw; it automatically happens.
The success of this effect depends entirely on the player, not on how difficult it is for the opponent to resist. It’s often frustrating in Dungeons & Dragons to cast spells like Slow on powerful creatures because they have a good chance of succeeding at the saving throw – and some can even retry with Legendary Resistances. This can be really discouraging for the player.
The Venom Monk’s special ability lets you bypass a common limitation, making a level 3 power incredibly effective at any level, even against powerful foes like Tiamat or Vecna. The ‘Slowing Toxin’ effect is surprisingly strong, potentially so strong that it might be adjusted before the official release in Dungeons & Dragons. It’s best to test it out now before your Dungeon Master realizes just how powerful it is!
