As a researcher who has been closely following the evolution of blockchain technology and its native tokens, I find myself both excited and cautiously optimistic about Polygon’s anticipated upgrade to Polygon 2.0. The successful introduction of POL as the network’s new native asset marks a significant step forward for Polygon, signaling the beginning of a new era that promises to bring more functionality and utility to its users.

As an analyst, I’m thrilled to announce that the long-awaited native token upgrade for Polygon has arrived. This significant step forward represents a pivotal moment in our journey towards realizing the Polygon 2.0 vision.

In an eagerly anticipated step for the Polygon community, the network launched its fresh native token, named POL. Notably, POL has taken over from MATIC, which had served as the network’s original asset since its inception. If MATIC holders have not already exchanged their tokens for POL, they are eligible to receive an equal amount of POL.

In a recent post on X, the Polygon team clarified that there’s no specific deadline for users to upgrade their MATIC tokens. They went on to say that all MATIC tokens on the Polygon Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network and staked MATIC on Ethereum will automatically upgrade on September 4th. Users who have MATIC linked to Ethereum in their wallets need to visit the Polygon Portal Interface to exchange their MATIC for POL using the migration contract. Similarly, those with the token stored in centralized exchange (CEX) accounts should also take the necessary steps to swap their MATIC tokens into POL.

However, Polygon warned users of the consequences of incorrectly calling the migration contract. “Incorrectly calling the migration contract can lead to the loss of funds.” It also asked users not to send any funds to the contract, which would cause irreversible fund loss. Furthermore, some dApps like KyberSwap and CoW Swap have the contract integrated with their platforms, which users may find easier to use when migrating their assets.

POL Will Play a Central Role in Polygon 2.0

The upgrade to the native token signifies an important milestone in Polygon’s future plans, ushering in what is known as the Polygon 2.0 phase. For some time now, discussions have centered around the POL upgrade, which was launched on its testnet on July 17. Now, with the mainnet upgrade, POL will be pivotal to Polygon’s AggLayer vision. The AggLayer, a proposed modular blockchain ecosystem, is expected to see POL function as the fuel token for transactions beyond just fees. It will serve as the means by which users can stake their tokens in data availability layers, sequencers, and various other functions, thereby encouraging numerous use cases by providing incentives.
