Releasing a film featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu prior to this show would have been a smarter move for the franchise, and it likely would have performed much better in theaters. Currently, the movie is launching at a time when the once-respected sci-fi brand is largely losing relevance and is even viewed negatively by its most dedicated fans. Now, just how irrelevant the brand has become will be put to the test, and the results could significantly impact the future of the galaxy far, far away.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Could Make or Break Star Wars
It’s estimated that The Mandalorian and Grogu cost around $166 million USD to produce, but Disney hasn’t officially confirmed this number. If accurate, that’s a relatively low budget, which is a good thing. To be profitable, the movie would need to earn over $415 million USD worldwide, and that seems achievable if the film is well-received. However, the actual budget could be significantly higher, potentially creating problems for the movie’s success. Considering the current lack of buzz, it’s probable that, without excellent reviews, the film might not perform strongly at the box office. We’ve seen this happen with several movies recently, even good ones, and a lack of strong interest in the brand is a major factor.

A year after this film, Lucasfilm and Disney plan to release Star Wars: Starfighter, another spinoff that aims to be quite “original.” This movie won’t heavily feature established characters, and will truly test the franchise’s ability to innovate and create new stories. If The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn’t perform well, but Starfighter succeeds, fresh concepts could become central to Star Wars. Conversely, if Mandalorian does well while Starfighter fails, we might see more movies based on the Disney+ series. However, if neither film meets Disney’s expectations, Star Wars could face another quiet period, both in theaters and on streaming. Hopefully, that won’t happen, but right now, it’s difficult to feel enthusiastic about the next Star Wars movie, which is essentially a spinoff by any other name.
