Summer House Recap: The Hug Heard Round the World

Looking back at this episode now is difficult. Moments that originally seemed supportive or revealing now feel much worse considering everything that’s happened since it was filmed. The episode begins with Ciara upset, confiding in Mia and Amanda about West ignoring her and kissing someone else at a party. Amanda tells Ciara she’s loved and deserves respect, a line that feels ironic given Amanda’s later actions – secretly getting involved with West herself while Ciara was unaware.

The rest of the weekend unfolded as expected. Everyone went to support Kyle’s DJ set, and afterward, a messy, food-strewn scene unfolded in the kitchen as Kyle and Jesse ate. Kyle ended the night thanking Amanda for coming, pretty much business as usual. The next morning, Carl and Bailey tackled the kitchen cleanup. Carl then ordered bagels and egg sandwiches for everyone, and impressively swatted a fly with a kitchen towel – possibly his most masculine moment ever shown on camera. Whatever else you might think of Carl, they all owe him big time for keeping things running while they recover from their hangovers.

Before leaving for the weekend, West apologized to Ciara for his poor behavior – specifically, for kissing Emmie Nader in front of her. Ciara explained that she wanted him to enjoy his life, but that she needed to end their friendship because she couldn’t handle the situation. West, wanting to avoid conflict, admitted he couldn’t cope with the awkwardness, but Ciara firmly stood her ground, stating she wasn’t able to offer him what he needed at that time.

West is holding a dog adoption event in town, and both Kyle and Amanda offer their support – both with the event itself and with West’s complicated relationship with Ciara. Amanda points out to West that he’s been a great friend to her all summer, especially while she sorted things out with Kyle, and she’s puzzled by his recent behavior towards Ciara. It makes her wonder what’s going on, especially considering West clearly has feelings for her. It seems odd that Amanda is trying to get West and Ciara back together when both of them could potentially disrupt everyone’s lives.

Ciara is genuinely helping others by introducing Mia and her brother, Nick, to her psychic, Tiffany. It was surprising to learn Tiffany spells her name differently than expected. I usually dismiss psychic storylines on Bravo shows – except for the time a psychic exposed a cancer lie on the Orange County series – but this scene really resonated with me. Mia and Nick recently lost both parents, and Mia has been grieving in her dreams. From the moment they meet Tiffany, she connects with their grandmother and then their mother, claiming their mother has been trying to reach Mia through those dreams. Both siblings become very emotional, and surprisingly, so did I! I never thought a psychic on a reality show would make me cry. It was a genuinely touching moment.

Mia shared with Tiffany that she and her mother had always planned for her to get married, have a baby, and for her mother to move to New York to help with childcare. She’s been upset that her mother didn’t follow through with this plan. Tiffany reassured Mia, telling her she would have a daughter and that her mother still intends to help. That’s when I was deeply moved, because all Mia needed to hear was that her mother’s support would always be there – that all the lessons, guidance, and even challenges her mother provided would stay with her forever. It didn’t matter if it took someone like Tiffany, whom Ciara met in Costa Rica, to bring her to this realization, or if everything said was completely true. What mattered was that Mia was beginning to heal, and that’s something many people never experience. This conversation also prompted Mia to reconsider her relationship with her boyfriend, Scott, and based on what we’ve seen so far, I think that’s a positive development.

Scott tags along for a weekend getaway with Kyle, Carl, Jesse, West, Ben, and KJ. The only women present are Dara, Ciara, Mia, and Ben’s ex, Sabrina, who keeps calling him with bizarre details about a dream she had. (Seriously, who is Sabrina? Everything I find out about her is awful and unwanted.) Amanda decides to skip the weekend altogether, needing space from Kyle after their recent issues. That seems reasonable.

When KJ and Dara arrived, they announced they were officially dating. It all started when KJ nervously passed Dara a note in seventh period asking if she liked him, with boxes to check for ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ She playfully rejected the note by crumpling it up, throwing it at him, and telling him to just kiss her. Mia and Ciara, who’ve quickly taken on big sister roles, were a little annoyed he hadn’t checked in with them all week. Ciara even declared, “I am never too busy for tea,” and suddenly a U.K. passport appeared, magically making her nineteenth in line for the throne! They had a sweet talk with KJ to make sure he wasn’t rushing into things, that he and Dara were on the same page, and to offer their full support. It was incredibly cute, and the moment would have been even better if Tiffany had chimed in to say that KJ’s grandmother and Dara’s grandmother were enjoying a game of Uno together in Heaven.

Once everyone was settled, West followed Amanda’s suggestion and apologized to Ciara again—which was a bit awkward since he was on a video call with Amanda while doing it. Surprisingly, it seemed to help. Ciara admitted in a private interview that while she didn’t hate him, pretending to was exhausting. She explained she’d created a narrative about him, and he probably had done the same, and they just needed to talk openly. She then asked him to get coffee the next morning, and he responded with a huge, somewhat suspicious, smile.

They grabbed coffee from Dunkin’ and sat by the water, and honestly, the conversation that followed was incredibly upsetting. I kept imagining how it could have resolved everything, fixed the issues for the next season, and brought all the characters together to wrap up that storyline. That would have allowed the show to move forward with fresh conflicts, maybe even focusing on Sabrina’s questionable shoe choices. Sadly, it just wasn’t meant to happen.

Ciara is very hurt by everything that happened, especially losing her close friend. She doesn’t easily trust people, and she’s afraid of letting him back into her life because she doesn’t want to be embarrassed again. Meanwhile, Tiffany warns that things will actually be even worse if she does. They revisit the beginning of the problems, recalling how he spoke to the media after their split and how that made her feel like he was downplaying their relationship. He claims she abandoned him and that he was just defending himself, and she surprisingly apologizes for him suffering without her, as if it was her responsibility to shield him.

Ciara believes things would be much easier if they weren’t constantly filmed and surrounded by fans. She’s right – without the public attention, she likely would have ended contact with this man a long time ago. However, the cameras are forcing them to confront their history and attempt to move forward, even though it’s incredibly difficult. He feels that social media and online communication are adding to the problem, potentially creating resentment, as both are desperate to escape the hurt and abuse. (Please note: Don’t contact these individuals directly or engage with them on social media. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section here.)

Okay, so West just apologized to Ciara, saying he’s sorry for everything, and that he finally gets it – he says he really sees her now. But honestly, I’m not convinced. It feels like he’s about to hurt her all over again. They’re now talking about being friends, best friends even, and she seems to want that too. It’s… complicated. They ended up hugging, a really long hug, like they were trying to hold onto something that’s already slipping away. She was crying, her head on his chest, and it just felt… off. They stayed like that for ages, while life went on around them – the waves, the seagulls, the cars – completely oblivious to the emotional rollercoaster happening right there. It was sweet, but so heartbreaking, because you could just feel that this whole thing was going to blow up again, and they didn’t even realize it. They were just lost in the moment, clinging to each other, and it was making everything so much worse.
