Similar to Vampire Survivors, Vampire Crawlers challenges players to defeat many boss monsters scattered across each level, ultimately leading to a showdown with one incredibly strong enemy.
The boss battles in these two games feel very different. In Vampire Survivors, you can move freely and dodge around enemies, including the boss chasing you. But in Vampire Crawlers, you’re stuck in place and have to fight the boss directly – there’s no running away!
Vampire Crawlers is great because it trusts players to figure things out on their own, which is really rewarding. However, this extends to the boss battles too – their unique mechanics aren’t well explained, so you’re often left to learn by trial and error.
Fortunately, players can defeat the Vampire Crawler bosses by choosing helpful items and using particular characters during their gameplay.
This guide was created using an early version of Vampire Crawlers, so some information might be different in the final game after updates.
The Glowing Eyes are the Key to Defeating Vampire Crawler Bosses

In Vampire Crawlers, you’ll fight most bosses after finishing a regular enemy encounter. You can identify them on the minimap by their horns. It’s helpful to defeat all other enemies on a floor first to earn experience, strengthen your deck, and improve your cards.
During the battle, you’ll see a huge shape moving closer in the background. When it reaches the front, glowing eyes will appear at the top of the screen, signaling the start of the main fight.
The Vampire Crawlers bosses are tough, dealing a lot of damage and having a large amount of health. What really makes them challenging is a special mechanic involving their eyes. Each time you play a card or end your turn, another eye symbol fills up. When all the eye symbols are filled, the boss gets a turn where they can either attack you or add a harmful card to your hand.
Players hoping to pull off long, damaging attack combinations against the Vampire Crawler bosses will likely be disappointed. These bosses can quickly deal a lot of damage with their eye attacks, often defeating you before you can complete your combo.
Hold onto any Wild Cards you discover in dungeons – they’re valuable for boss fights! These grey cards let you add to your combos even if you don’t have enough of the usual cards, and you can find items inside breakable torches with them.
Those eyes might seem like a nuisance, but they’re actually there to help you! In Vampire Crawlers, simply dealing damage to bosses isn’t enough. You need to apply status effects right before they attack, and the eyes are there to give you a visual cue for when to do it.
Looking at the screenshot, you’ll notice most of the eye symbols are filled. This means the monster will attack after you play two more cards. How you proceed depends on the cards you currently have in your hand, so you’ll need to adjust your strategy accordingly.

Okay, so when I’m fighting a boss, I’ve learned it’s super helpful to try and hit them with a Knockback, Disarm, or Freeze effect – and the best time to do it is when I’m playing a card on the very last eye symbol. If I can pull that off, it stops the boss from using their special attack, which gives me a breather to set up a new, awesome combo. You can find a list of cards that do those effects a little further down.
Another strategy is to focus on building long sequences with Armor cards. These cards give you temporary health that protects you before any actual damage, so it’s a good idea to collect them during your playthrough. Adding Wild Card gems to these Armor cards lets you use them within a combo, allowing you to absorb most or all of an attack and keep your chain going.
Okay, so listen up – when you’re fighting the big bosses, you have to go all-out! Seriously, don’t drag things out, because if a fight takes too long, one of those Reapers will show up and just wipe the floor with you. That means you can’t just slowly whittle away at their health. You still need to deal a lot of damage, even while using status effects. It’s about hitting hard and being smart!
Best Cards & Gems for Facing Vampire Crawlers Bosses

As you progress in Vampire Crawlers, enemies become much tougher, so getting cards and weapons that inflict status effects is key to survival. One of the best options is the Unholy Vespers, crafted by combining the King Bible (red card) with the Spellbinder (yellow card). This powerful book deals damage, reliably knocks enemies back, and only costs 2 mana, making it perfect for when you’re facing a lot of enemies at once.
The Soul Eater is another excellent option, crafted from Garlic and Pummarola. Like the previous weapon, it costs 2 mana and can Disarm your opponent, stopping them from taking their turn – but this only works if you play it right as the final eye opens.
Freezing enemies is one of the most effective status effects in the game. The Clock Lancet reliably causes this Freeze, and using it earlier in your attack sequence lets it affect more enemies. However, because of the game’s random elements, you aren’t always guaranteed to get the Clock Lancet unless you choose a specific character.
When choosing Gems, focus on Wild Cards or those that reduce mana cost for weapons that inflict status effects. You want these weapons to be inexpensive to use or allow you to continue attacking afterward, ensuring they’re always ready when you need them and helping you maintain high damage output.
Even if you don’t find the Unholy Vespers or Soul Eater, the Holy Bible and Garlic can still inflict their special effects, but it won’t happen every time.
Best Characters for Facing Vampire Crawlers Bosses

You won’t really need to worry about choosing the best Crawler until the final part of Vampire Crawlers. The bosses don’t get challenging until the last two dungeons, so you can focus on experimenting with different Crawlers earlier in the game. Once you reach those final dungeons, though, it’s time to think carefully about which character will work best.

Just so you know, there’s a special upgrade that lets you bring two extra Crawlers with you on each run! It looks like a small caravan and can be pricey to fully upgrade, but it’s definitely worth the investment. With the max upgrade, you’ll have a team of three Crawlers running alongside you.
Krochi is the ideal character to use when attempting challenging boss battles. He provides free revivals – essentially extra lives that completely restore your health – and can earn even more. Given how difficult the boss fights are in Vampire Crawlers, Krochi significantly increases your chances of survival.
Gallo begins with the Clock Lancet, a weapon that lets you temporarily slow down tough bosses. He also gains experience and gold faster, making your runs smoother. However, you unlock him relatively late in the game, so he’s most effective in the last two dungeons.
Mortaccio is one of the best Crawlers in the game, especially when you’re starting out in the earlier dungeons. He remains valuable later on because his Bones are inexpensive to use, do significant damage, and become even more powerful as you progress through a run thanks to his ability that increases their quantity.
