I’m so excited! Netflix just announced that the live-action movie with Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo has officially started filming. It feels like it’s finally happening, and I can’t wait to see what they create!
Production on a new film based on the popular franchise has begun in Queensland, Australia, as of April 20, 2026. Jim Mickle, known for directing Sweet Tooth and Cold in July, is at the helm of this story, which takes place during a long-running space war. Netflix says the film will appeal to existing fans and features a cast including stars from The White Lotus, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Dune: Part Three.
Netflix Teases Its Upcoming Live-Action Gundam Movie
Now that filming is underway, Netflix has revealed a first look at what the live-action Gundam movie will be about. According to a description from Tudum, the story follows characters with changing loyalties who are drawn into a dangerous, galaxy-spanning competition that will determine the future of humankind. The movie promises spectacular battles, emotional depth, and a grand, cinematic experience, offering a fresh take on the Gundam universe.
Tudum recently announced a star-studded cast for the upcoming project, featuring actors like Sweeney, Centineo, Jackson White (known for Tell Me Lies), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), Nonso Anozie (Sweet Tooth), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Javon “Wanna” Walton (Under the Bridge), Oleksandr Rudynskyi (The Agency), Ida Brooke (Dune: Part Three), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High), and Jason Isaacs. Details about the specific characters each actor will play have not yet been released.
I just got a first look at the upcoming Gundam live-action film, and it’s a pretty impressive team behind it! Netflix is teaming up with Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks to bring this iconic series to life. Director and producer Mickle is working with his partner Linda Moran through their Nightshade production company, and they’ve brought on Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, Sweeney, Centineo, and Enzo Marc to help. Rounding out the production powerhouses are executive producers Matthew Jenkins, Makoto Asanuma, and Naohiro Ogata. It sounds like they’re really pulling out all the stops to do Gundam justice.
Gundam’s Live-Action Film Has Been In Development For Nearly a Decade
Netflix has shared exciting news for fans of the popular anime series Gundam. A live-action movie based on the show was first announced in July 2018, and Sweeney was cast as the main character in March 2025. We can expect more details about the story and who else is in the movie as filming continues in the months ahead.
Originally broadcast in Japan in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam centers on a conflict between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation. It launched the popular Gundam franchise, known for its massive robots called ‘Mobile Suits.’ The series is celebrated for creating the “real robot” genre, offering complex stories about war and politics – a departure from the magical or superhero themes common in anime at the time.
Sydney Sweeney’s Gundam film does not have a release date at this time.
