Okay, so for ages, comic fans like me have been debating who’d win in a showdown: Superman or Thor? Well, DC is finally going to give us an answer, but it’s not going to be a straight-up fight like everyone thought!
DC Comics will be reprinting a classic Batman story in July 2026 with Batman #127 Facsimile Edition. Originally published in 1959, this issue features a team-up between Batman, Robin, and the Norse god Thor.
Most Marvel fans are aware that Thor, originally created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Larry Lieber, first appeared in comic books in 1962 with Journey into Mystery #83. This is the version of the character that predates – and differs from – the portrayal Chris Hemsworth made famous in the Marvel Cinematic Universe years later.
This character shares several key features with the well-known comic book version, including a winged, glowing golden helmet, a cape, and his weapon, Mjölnir – which here is simply a stone attached to a wooden handle. Unlike the comic book portrayal, this version doesn’t have long blonde hair, but it does have a red beard, staying true to how the character is described in Norse mythology.
Although it’s not an official crossover, Batman #127, created by Jerry Coleman, Bill Finger, Dick Sprang, and Sheldon Moldoff, is the closest we’ve gotten to seeing Batman fight Thor. Bruce Wayne would eventually meet a version of the god-like hero from Marvel years later, however.
The comic book series JLA/Avengers, published between September 2003 and March 2004, features a team-up between DC’s Justice League and Marvel’s greatest heroes. Created by writer Kurt Busiek and artist George Pérez, the four-issue story begins with the heroes being forced by the villains Grandmaster and Krona to find 12 powerful artifacts. This quest ultimately leads to a collision of their universes and a battle against cosmic threats – as seen on the cover where Batman and Thor stand side-by-side.
Besides the fight with Thor, Batman #127 Facsimile Edition will show Bruce Wayne briefly seeing a world where his parents survived. This issue also marks the start of Alfred Pennyworth becoming a super-powered ally—calling himself The Eagle—after discovering a device in the Batcave that boosts his strength and speed.
DC Has Other Facsimile Editions Of Classic Comics Planned For July 2026
A “Facsimile Edition” is a reprint of an older DC comic, reproduced exactly as it originally appeared, even including the vintage ads. For instance, Batman #127 is a classic issue that’s been re-released this way, and it’s happening with many other beloved comics this month.
Fans of The Dark Knight can look forward to another classic reprint on July 8th: Batman #156 from 1963. This story, created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff, has a fun twist – it initially seems like a team-up between DC and Marvel, as Robin encounters a character who calls himself Ant-Man.
On July 8th, a special edition of Green Lantern #49 will be released. Originally published in 1990 and written by Ron Marz with art by Fred Haynes, this issue features a key story arc for Hal Jordan following the devastating events in Coast City.
Next week, comic book fans can revisit the very first appearance of a key DC character in Showcase #4 Facsimile Edition. This classic story, originally published in 1956, features writing by Robert Kanigher and John Broome, with art by Carmine Infantino, and tells the tale of a forensic scientist struck by lightning.
On July 22nd, a special reprint of Justice League of America #200 will be released. Originally published in 1982 and created by Gerry Conway with art from a team of renowned artists, this anniversary issue pits the Justice League’s original members against its more recent heroes.
Fans can also enjoy a special team-up featuring Batman and Thor! This limited series, which brings the two heroes together, will be released in four parts, one each month from May through August.
Batman #127 Facsimile Edition hits the shelves on July 1, 2026.
