Disney and Lucasfilm are about to return to the Star Wars universe with The Mandalorian and Grogu, their first movie release in nearly seven years. The film continues the story from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, following Din Djarin and Grogu on a new adventure set within the world of the New Republic. They’ll once again face danger, encountering both the Hutt clan and a new threat named Embo, who originally appeared in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Promotion for the film began in September 2025 with the release of the first trailer, giving fans glimpses of the main characters and the rest of the cast. The movie promises non-stop action, from traditional Star Wars spaceship fights to a new gladiator match with Rota the Hutt, despite being shorter than other films in the series. After a week of exciting previews, viewers now have a detailed look at how the twelfth Star Wars movie will start.
MovieWeb was invited to visit the set of The Mandalorian and Grogu by Disney and Lucasfilm. During the visit, they previewed the first 20 minutes of the new film, footage that was also presented at Disney’s CinemaCon 2026 showcase.
The film begins with a text crawl similar to those in the original Star Wars movies, explaining that the Galactic Empire has fallen and the New Republic is trying to bring the galaxy back together. We then see Din Djarin and Grogu tracking down former Imperial soldiers. The scene shifts to an Imperial base where a local official is addressing a worried crowd. They’re concerned about increasing fees and attacks on trade routes, leading to financial losses. When someone asks if security is failing, the official shuts down the question and demands they focus on fixing the problem instead of making excuses.

When the Mandalorian forcefully enters, alarms immediately sound. The man sitting at the table cries out, “Long live the Empire!” and flees in an elevator. Mando quickly defeats the remaining guards, using a flamethrower on some, then forces the elevator doors open with a device that sends the elevator plummeting downwards.
Grogu shows off his Force abilities by playing with a droid, lifting it, taking it apart, and happily babbling. He then cleverly evades an Imperial walker, climbs on top, and surprisingly manages to disable the pilot, taking control of the machine. Mando and Grogu ride the walker down a snowy mountain, only to run into three enormous AT-AT walkers, one commanded by the escaping Imperial leader. They are fired upon, forcing Mando to jetpack to safety with Grogu, but the walker Grogu was controlling is destroyed. Mando then uses explosives to take out one of the enemy walkers, sending it plummeting off a cliff.

Mando jumps onto a ship and enters a long, thrilling action scene that feels like one continuous shot. He systematically defeats soldiers amidst a chaotic environment filled with drones, dangling cargo, and blaster fire. During the fight, Mando is locked out of the ship’s cockpit, while the camera remains inside with the frightened captain, who communicates with the Imperial commander operating a walker outside. Mando finally forces his way back onto the ship just as another walker is destroyed, and an Imperial soldier plummets to his death off a cliff.
With the ship on autopilot and explosives set to go off, Mando prepares to fire a crucial shot. Grogu, restless while Mando aims, accidentally causes a crash with the enemy leader’s vehicle when the shot is fired. They blast out of the ship just in time to be rescued mid-air by Zeb Orellios, who jokes that it’s better to capture enemies alive—taking down one can lead to the others. Immediately after being rescued, Mando makes sure Grogu is safe.
The scene opens with five X-wings flying past the sun. We then cut to a Republic base bustling with activity as ships are readied for launch. Zeb, dressed in blue and white, walks through the base alongside Mando and Grogu. In the background, R2 units and BD droids can be seen, all set to Ludwig Göransson’s familiar theme from the Disney+ series.
In a recent encounter, Sigourney Weaver’s character, Colonel Ward, meets with Din Djarin (Mando). She criticizes his approach as chaotic and explains she needs information on their enemies – information she’s now unable to obtain. The trailer reveals her motivation isn’t about getting revenge, but about preventing future conflict and safeguarding the ideals of the Rebellion. Meanwhile, Mando is primarily interested in completing the job for a reward, and Grogu is simply enjoying his meal.

I was completely blown away when, instead of just paying me, Ward presented a flawless Razor Crest – a perfect replica of the ship from The Mandalorian’s first season! She said it was an advance for my next job: tracking down Commander Coyne, an Imperial officer many think is long gone. The trail led me to the Hutts, and I had to navigate their world to get information. They needed someone to rescue their nephew out in the Outer Rim, and while I wasn’t thrilled about a rescue mission, they made it clear that completing it was the only way I’d get what I needed. Ward was firm: no job, no payment, and no ship.
Zeb joins the man on the ship and suggests he explore. Grogu, meanwhile, hops onto the bed where he used to sleep on their old ship, the Razor Crest. The man notes the ship is aged but tidy, and when he starts it up, Grogu quickly climbs into the passenger seat and starts pressing all the buttons. The man immediately stops him, securing Grogu in his seat and firmly saying, “Don’t touch the buttons.”
The scene concludes with the Razor Crest’s thrilling takeoff. We see stunning aerial views as the ship rapidly ascends from its landing site, flies over the water, and then blasts off into space. Finally, it makes the jump to lightspeed, coinciding with the start of the highlight reel.
The upcoming film featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu promises a thrilling and potentially dangerous new adventure for the pair. Starting with immediate action and drama, the movie is already generating excitement about what’s to come.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will debut in theaters on May 22, 2026.
