PlayStation is locking messages and voice chat behind age verification

PlayStation is rolling out age verification for messages and voice chat later this year.

For thirty years, Sony PlayStation has been a staple in homes, and connecting with friends while playing games has always been a key part of the experience.

Okay, so here’s the deal – Sony’s starting to ask for age verification on PlayStation, and it’s a bit of a bummer. If you don’t go through the process, you won’t be able to use things like messaging or party chat. Basically, they’re changing how we connect with friends online, and this is what you need to know about it.

What changes for PlayStation players who don’t verify their age

Sony announced that all PlayStation users will soon need to prove their age to continue using messaging and voice chat. These features will only be available to players who are adults.

So far, only people in the UK and Ireland have said they’ve received the email, which indicates it’s being released gradually by region.

The verification process is a quick, one-time step that Sony estimates takes only a few minutes. Players can complete it by scanning their face, uploading a government-issued ID, or verifying their mobile phone number.

The company announced it’s dedicated to making games safe and suitable for all ages, while also protecting players’ privacy and giving them and their parents control over how they play.

The account verification process won’t limit access to most PlayStation features. Players who don’t verify their accounts will still be able to play games, earn trophies, and browse the PlayStation Store as usual. The only restriction will be on using communication features like messaging and party chat.

PlayStation isn’t alone in taking this step. Discord and Roblox have also recently implemented more thorough age verification processes. This change has been driven by both increasing legal requirements and, particularly for Roblox, serious concerns about child safety that led to significant public attention.
