A relatively unknown action star is quickly gaining popularity thanks to his incredible skills, which rival those of iconic heroes like John Rambo and John Wick. This new action thriller combines the best elements of both characters and places them in a World War II setting, and it’s becoming a huge hit with viewers – and it’s not hard to understand why.
I have to say, Sisu is an absolute blast! It’s basically what would happen if John Wick went up against Nazis, and it’s directed by Jalmari Helander. The main character, Aatami Korpi, played by Jorma Tommila, is this incredibly stoic and quiet gold prospector who just wants to be left alone at the very end of World War II. These soldiers mess with the wrong guy when they steal his gold, though. It doesn’t involve a dog this time, thankfully – his pup is safe! – but it unleashes a level of fury and skill from Aatami that’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on screen. It’s a wild ride!
‘Sisu’ Holds a “Certified Fresh” 94% on Rotten Tomatoes
The Finnish concept of “sisu” – a relentless courage and unwavering determination – is powerfully displayed in the new action film Sisu. The movie follows a lone hero battling impossible odds, and it’s quickly become a hit on Netflix, currently ranking among the platform’s top 10 most popular titles. It’s sharing that spot with other action favorites like the new Naked Gun reboot starring Liam Neeson, Sylvester Stallone’s Escape Plan 2: Hades, and the shark thriller Thrash.
Since its release, Sisu has become a standout action thriller. Initially overlooked, the film gained popularity as a sleeper hit, fueled by its intense violence, compelling lead actor, and unique blend of war movie elements with modern action. Critics loved it too, giving it a 94% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And it delivers all this in a concise 91-minute runtime.
The ‘Sisu’ Franchise Unleashed an Equally Great Sequel Just Last Year
I was so excited to hear that Sisu was getting a sequel! Sisu: Road to Revenge came out last year and it did not disappoint. Jalmari Helander returned to write and direct, and it picks up right where the first movie left off. This time, it feels a bit like Mad Max as Aatami Korpi is forced to hit the road, still hunted by that ruthless Red Army commander – Stephen Lang is fantastic in the role, you might recognize him from Avatar and Don’t Breathe – who’s determined to finally finish what he started.
Following the success of the first film, Sisu: Road to Revenge has earned a fantastic 93% score, making it another highly-rated action thriller. Remarkably, it achieves this in just 89 minutes! Like the original Sisu, Road to Revenge is currently streaming on Netflix in the US, and available to rent on Prime Video and Apple TV in other regions. While a third Sisu movie isn’t planned right now, director Jalmari Helander told MovieWeb he’s open to the idea, suggesting more trouble could be ahead for the seemingly unstoppable protagonist. So, the story of “the man who refuses to die” might not be over yet.
