A recent original series on Disney+ actually deepened existing disagreements among Star Wars fans – disagreements that started back in 2017. The Star Wars franchise has always had a somewhat divided fanbase. When the prequel movies were released, they received a lot of criticism, and fans who enjoyed the older Expanded Universe stories didn’t like The Clone Wars series at first. However, over time, those divisions lessened, and now both the prequels and The Clone Wars are enjoyed by many.
The release of The Last Jedi in 2017 caused a major split among Star Wars fans, and that division still exists today. Some fans and critics praised the film for taking bold risks with the character of Luke Skywalker and the overall direction of the franchise. Others strongly disliked it, feeling it diminished Luke’s character, unnecessarily elevated Rey, and didn’t follow through on the story established in The Force Awakens.
Some fans who strongly disliked The Last Jedi amplified their criticism by focusing on broader cultural divides. Even with The Force Awakens, Rey was criticized for being overly perfect. The Last Jedi then portrayed her as even more powerful while showing Luke Skywalker, a traditionally heroic character, as withdrawn and unwilling to fight, which many fans saw as further proof of the film’s flaws and intensified the backlash.
The Star Wars franchise has struggled since The Last Jedi. While shows like The Mandalorian and Andor were well-received, and The Rise of Skywalker was criticized, the division caused by The Last Jedi still lingers. Some fans completely rejected the sequel trilogy, preferring the earlier prequel films, while others wanted to see Rey’s story continue and valued the character development Luke Skywalker experienced in The Last Jedi.
In 2024, the release of the Star Wars series The Acolyte sparked intense debate and reopened old disagreements within the fanbase. The show proved highly controversial, intensifying existing “culture wars” related to Star Wars’ increasing focus on diversity. Created by a gay woman and starring a diverse cast—including a Black woman and a Korean man in leading roles—The Acolyte became a focal point for these discussions.
Despite the excitement surrounding The Acolyte, many viewers had valid criticisms. The show’s rhythm felt off – some episodes dragged on, while others rushed through events. The big mystery surrounding the events on Brendok didn’t deliver a satisfying answer for many. Plus, some fans felt misled because the series, initially promoted as a show about the Sith, actually focused on lesser-known Force users and a set of twins.
Some fans of Star Wars strongly disliked the series The Acolyte, and argued that it contradicted established storylines. They pointed to specific plot points – like the reappearance of Ki-Adi Mundi long before The Phantom Menace, and the birth of Mae and Osha from the Force (when Anakin Skywalker was previously the only character known to be born that way) – as proof that the show’s creator, Leslye Headland, didn’t have enough respect for the Star Wars universe.
Fans who enjoyed The Acolyte appreciated it for what it offered, focusing on the intriguing backstory of Master Sol and his complex relationships with Mae and Osha. They were generally willing to accept deviations from established Star Wars lore and believed the show had promise. Many also praised specific elements, like Manny Jacinto’s performance and the well-executed action sequences.
Ultimately, Disney and Lucasfilm decided not to move forward with a second season of The Acolyte. Despite a significant investment of $231 million, the show proved too controversial and ratings suffered. The season finale left many questions unanswered and hinted at future storylines, suggesting that the show’s divisive nature likely contributed to its cancellation.
While The Last Jedi caused some division among Star Wars fans, The Acolyte drove them much further apart. Discussions about representation – particularly regarding people of color and women – became even more heated. Those who already preferred the older Star Wars films became even more committed to that era, and it felt like fans couldn’t agree on anything. After The Last Jedi, the Star Wars universe felt strained but still connected, but The Acolyte seemed to split the fanbase in two.
Why The Acolyte Season 2 Could Have Healed The Divide
What’s most frustrating about the mixed reactions to The Acolyte is that it had the potential to bring Star Wars fans together. The show offered many elements that fans could have easily agreed on—most people enjoyed the character of The Stranger, the lightsaber battles were outstanding, and exploring the High Republic era offered a new and interesting side of the Star Wars universe.
The Acolyte had a lot of promise for all kinds of Star Wars fans. The show hinted at the possibility of Darth Plagueis appearing in later seasons, which would have excited fans of both the prequel films and the older Expanded Universe stories. Including Plagueis would have allowed the second season to delve into the activities of the Sith leading up to Palpatine’s power grab and the events of The Phantom Menace.
Viewers were eagerly anticipating what would happen next in The Acolyte before its cancellation. The budding romance between Osha and the Stranger held a lot of potential, the show seemed poised to reveal more about the origins of the Jedi Order’s downfall, and it was the first time the High Republic era had been brought to life on screen. Many unanswered questions kept fans engaged and wanting more.
The Acolyte had the potential to bridge the gap between Star Wars fans who loved or hated The Last Jedi. It could have demonstrated that fans wanting more prequel-era stories and those eager to see the franchise move beyond the Skywalker family could both get what they wanted. With another season, the show might have reunited the Star Wars fanbase. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect and further divided them.
