Scarlett Johansson’s funny and daring comedy is now available to stream, and it’s perfect if you’re looking for a fun and exciting movie night.
Scarlett Johansson is one of the most successful actresses currently working. She’s famous for playing Black Widow in nine Marvel Cinematic Universe films and recently joined the Jurassic World franchise with the upcoming Rebirth (2025). In 2020, she received Academy Award nominations for both Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit – a rare achievement for any actor. But lately, many people are rediscovering her earlier, more playful comedy films, which are now popular on streaming services.
The 2016 comedy Rough Night is now streaming on HBO Max. Directed by Lucia Aniello, who also co-wrote the script with Paul W. Downs (the team behind HBO Max’s Hacks), the film follows a bride-to-be, played by Scarlett Johansson, whose bachelorette party in Miami goes horribly wrong when a stripper unexpectedly dies at their rental house.
As of today, April 17th, the movie Rough Night is currently the most popular film on HBO Max worldwide. It’s beating out other titles like Anaconda (2025), Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, and The Wedding Ringer, all the way down to You, Me & Her at number 10.
Currently, the movie Rough Night is the top-ranked film in 20 countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, like Argentina, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. While it’s not available on HBO Max in the US, you can rent or buy it on platforms like Prime Video for as little as $3.99.
The film features a talented cast including Jillian Bell (known from Saturday Night Live), Kate McKinnon (a two-time Emmy winner from SNL), Ilana Glazer (Emmy nominated for Hack Into Broad City), Zoë Kravitz (The Studio), Paul W. Downs (four-time Emmy winner for Hacks), Demi Moore (an Oscar nominee from The Substance), Ty Burrell (two-time Emmy winner for Modern Family), Bo Burnham (three-time Emmy winner for Inside), Eric André (Emmy winner for The Eric Andre Show), and Hasan Minhaj.
The movie Rough Night received generally lukewarm reviews. Critics at Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 45% rating, noting that while the film features a talented cast and some funny moments, it feels disjointed and doesn’t quite live up to its potential. Viewers rated it even lower, with a score of just 29%.
The movie Rough Night didn’t perform spectacularly in theaters, earning $47 million worldwide against a $26 million production cost – not enough to make a profit. But surprisingly, nine years after its release, it’s become a huge streaming success, currently topping the charts on HBO Max.
