Most stories show villains being defeated. From ancient myths to modern tales, powerful enemies are usually overcome with courage, a bit of luck, and sometimes, help from a higher power. The typical story arc involves a villain creating trouble, a hero stepping up, and the world being saved… but that’s not always the case.
Sometimes, even a hero can’t win. Occasionally, a villain is simply too strong, making the outcome a foregone conclusion. These stories often show us that some challenges are impossible to overcome, and the smartest choice is to avoid them or know when to stop.
Johan Liebert’s Legacy of Fear Remains Forever
Johan Liebert isn’t gifted with any superhuman abilities. He doesn’t have the incredible strength of characters like Frieza or the magical power of Ainz Ooal Gown, nor the sheer destructive force of Madara Uchiha. However, he’s still incredibly dangerous because of his brilliant mind and ruthless nature. A serial killer who aims to wipe out all of humanity, Liebert carefully plans and flawlessly executes what he calls his ‘perfect suicide’.
Liebert’s journey in Monster began and ended in a hospital. While Dr. Tenma briefly stopped Liebert from carrying out his cruel plans, Liebert’s escape meant this success wouldn’t last. True to classic horror villains, Liebert wouldn’t stay defeated for long. He was beaten once, but it was only a matter of time before he resurfaced.
Griffith Gains Divine Power, Guts is Left for Dead
The anime versions of Berserk are known for being incredibly dark and disturbing, possibly the most bleak in the dark fantasy genre. The story starts with Griffith appearing as the savior the world needs, but he eventually becomes a terrifying villain – a shocking turn of events in a world already filled with ruthless killers and ambitious leaders.
Griffith achieved his ultimate goal by sacrificing his comrades in the Band of the Hawk, transforming himself into Femto, an immortal being and one of the Godhand. These five powerful entities are essentially the living embodiment of evil, able to manipulate fate and ensure that misfortune always finds a way. Guts, who previously defeated Griffith when he was human, is now completely unable to stand against his demonic form.
Adam Smasher and the Society that Made Him Break David’s Gang Down
From the start, the odds were stacked against David. He lives in a world dominated by late-stage capitalism, where wealth flows into corporations and the military. Although David and his friends briefly find some success, it doesn’t last, and they’re ultimately forced back into the difficult lives they were trying to escape.
David’s group fell apart while facing dangers from both inside and outside, and the Araska Corporation’s deadliest mercenary delivered the final blow. Adam Smasher, a being of incredible strength and ruthlessness who replaced most of his body with machines, was completely dedicated to his corporate employers. Despite David’s own cybernetic enhancements making him powerful, the very system that created him was what ultimately defeated him. Adam Smasher was the one who finally ended it.
The Dystopian Sibyl System Remains in Place
Similar to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the characters in Psycho-Pass are trapped by the society they live in. The system in Psycho-Pass constantly watches everyone and decides who is likely to commit crimes, effectively acting as judge, jury, and executioner. While the villain, Shogo Makishima, exposed flaws in the system and was eventually stopped, the flawed system itself continues to exist.
I watched as the characters in Psycho-Pass discovered just how disturbing the Sibyl System truly was, but it felt like they couldn’t do anything about it. The system wasn’t just a program; it was woven into everything around them, the very bedrock of their society. It became clear that dismantling it would mean collapsing everything, so despite how awful it was, the Sibyl System stayed in place – a necessary evil, it seemed.
God is the Ultimate Undefeated Evil
The anime Devilman Crybaby is a groundbreaking series that influenced many dark fantasy stories, including Berserk and Devilman. It centers on Akira Fudo, who gains demonic powers hoping to protect humanity. However, the series takes a tragic turn as humanity ultimately destroys itself, driven by fear and its own inner darkness—a fate seemingly predetermined by a higher power.
In the final moments of the series, Akira’s close friend, a rebellious fallen angel named Lucifer, faces a terrible fate. After accidentally killing the person he loves during a world-ending battle, he’s left utterly alone as time restarts and the world is reborn. This is Satan’s eternal punishment – being forced to repeatedly kill someone he cares for. It’s a cruel and unending torment inflicted by a vengeful God.
Bondrewd is Free to Keep Experimenting on Children
Made in Abyss is a notably dark fantasy anime that often shocks viewers with its disturbing and brutal depiction of suffering, especially inflicted upon young characters. The story follows Riko as she ventures into the dangerous Abyss searching for her mother, and along the way, she meets an experienced explorer who initially seems like a caring father figure, but quickly reveals a sinister side.
Bondrewd conducts horrifying experiments on children, hoping to learn about and overcome the dangerous magic of the Abyss. While Riko and Reg manage to escape him, they can’t stop his work. Their fight with him forces them to descend further into the Abyss, leaving Bondrewd free to continue his disturbing research.
Everything Went Exactly According to Lelouch’s Plan
Similar to many ambitious leaders, Lelouch Lamperouge is determined to achieve admirable goals, even if it means using questionable methods. He’s a brilliant strategist who often sees his followers as tools to be used in his larger plan to overthrow the government. Ultimately, he succeeds in taking control of the Holy Empire.
Britannian Empire, he replaces one form of tyranny with another.
I watched as Lelouch made the ultimate sacrifice, giving up his own life to achieve his goals. He carefully planned his own assassination, hoping it would finally bring humanity together against oppressive rule. It reminded me a lot of the plan Ozymandias carried out in Watchmen – faking an alien invasion to force the world’s nations to unite. Both of their plans worked, but at a truly terrible moral cost. It was a success built on a foundation of immense sacrifice and questionable ethics.
Madara Uchiha Couldn’t be Defeated in Direct Combat
Madara Uchiha was a legendary shinobi, considered the most powerful warrior of his time and a source of immense pride for the Uchiha clan. He was a force to be reckoned with, capable of defeating entire armies on his own. Madara conquered the powerful Tailed Beasts, brought back legendary warriors from the past, and even defeated the incredibly skilled Might Guy. It seemed there was no challenge Madara couldn’t overcome.
Madara wasn’t defeated because he wasn’t strong enough, but because he didn’t see the bigger picture. He was so focused on forcing peace through mind control that he didn’t realize someone was manipulating him. This made him completely unprepared for the betrayal of Black Zetsu, who was actually the will of Kaguya Otsutsuki.
Gilgamesh Was Unbeatable in the Fourth Holy Grail War
Gilgamesh is often considered one of anime’s strongest characters, and he’s incredibly arrogant to match. Calling himself the King of Heroes, he commands an endless supply of weapons that he throws at enemies with incredible speed. He’s never been defeated and always emerges from battle unscathed.
Despite regaining his human side after the Fourth Holy Grail War, his abilities are beyond human understanding. His most powerful weapon is Ea, a divine sword that can tear apart reality. He’s so strong that he rarely needs to use it, and even when Saber compels him to fight at the end, he remains unharmed.
Beerus Becomes an Ally, But Was Once an Undefeated Foe
Beerus, the God of Destruction from Universe 7, is incredibly powerful, even in a series known for its strong fighters. He starts out as a villain intent on destroying planets, but later becomes friendly – or at least doesn’t actively oppose – the Z warriors.
The battle between Goku and Beerus is a pivotal moment in the series, pushing Goku to reach a new level of power. Even after Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan God, he can’t win against Beerus. Ultimately, Beerus spares Earth not because of Goku’s strength, but because he enjoys the planet’s fighters and its delicious food.
