Beef Recap: Take What You Need

The second season of Beef began with a lot of plot twists, then shifted focus to exploring its characters. Now, as the season nears its end, the drama is building again. This episode centers on each character trying to get what they want from the others. While Lindsay and Josh are relieved to be divorcing, they’re not handling it in a typical way. They initially convince themselves they’re being mature about selling their house and dividing the money, with Josh keeping their new dachshund, though he might reconsider the name Burberry. Josh wants to announce the divorce on Instagram, but it’s premature, the photo isn’t good, and the caption feels wrong – it just makes everything too permanent.

Announcing the news, dealing with her dog and house – those were the simple parts for Lindsay. Her real worry is that Josh still hasn’t signed his contract extension. He says the chairwoman is being overly picky about the wording, but Lindsay isn’t sure she believes him. She cautiously asks Meredith, a divorce lawyer and a fellow club member, a series of questions, pretending they’re for a friend named Penelope. Penelope’s husband is about to be promoted, and they’re on the verge of divorce. Lindsay wants to know if Penelope would be entitled to a share of her husband’s future earnings, especially if she can prove she helped him get the promotion, or if she had damaging information about him. Meredith politely tells Lindsay that if Penelope has legal questions, she should schedule a consultation at her office – a birthday party isn’t the place to discuss them. Before Lindsay can even ask about Meredith’s fees, her son, Jimmy, hits her with a toy snake for the second time, insisting she come play in the bounce house with him. It’s embarrassing, but Lindsay is used to putting up with a little humiliation to get information from the women at the club.

As Lindsay and Josh become increasingly self-absorbed, the chairwoman focuses on minimizing the fallout from the situation. Her lawyer stresses the urgent need to create a clear, legal money trail from the club to Trochos, as the police investigation into Dr. Kim’s patient’s death could uncover the invoices, especially when they interview Eunice and Woosh. The chairwoman anticipates Woosh will disapprove of a proposed club program offering staff a 10% commission on medical tourism sales, but she sees it as necessary for her own protection. Josh then announces the partnership to the staff. Eunice seems wary but continues working, touring the gym with Austin to assess equipment purchases and replacements. Austin uses this as a chance to reconnect with Eunice, who has been distant since the hospital incident, reminding her he’s available to talk – but only before dinner and ideally in a public place.

Each evening, Ashley checks Austin’s phone to see if he’s been communicating with Eunice, admitting it’s an unhealthy habit but one that temporarily eases her worries. This constant focus on their relationship is actually a way for her to deal with her fears about their future. On top of a recent hospital stay, everyday expenses like parking, subscriptions, and food delivery have left them with over $27,000 in debt. Initially overwhelmed by the idea of a deductible, Ashley has grown numb to financial burdens and is now facing the possibility of expensive out-of-network care. While she stresses about how they’ll afford IVF, Austin tries to convince her to focus on enjoying what they can afford right now—a familiar argument echoing one from earlier in the season. Ashley fears that if they don’t move quickly, the small amount of stability they’re beginning to achieve will disappear.

Okay, as a movie lover, let me tell you, it’s super clear Ashley and Austin are nowhere near ready for a baby. Ashley seriously lacks good role models, and Lindsay is just eager to step in and fill that void. It’s wild – one minute Ashley’s basically shoplifting water bottles and snacks, and the next Lindsay is chasing after her with a present to thank her for helping find a Burberry item! The gift? A whole golf outfit so Ashley can play with Ava, whose cousin happens to be a top OB/GYN – seriously, apparently she delivers all the celebrity babies. The idea is if Ashley plays things right, Ava might be able to get her a consultation. Lindsay even starts giving Ashley lessons on how to work the other women at the club to get what she wants. And the whole thing happens right as Josh walks by, catching Lindsay in a really tight hug with Ashley – talk about awkward!

Lindsay is now focused on befriending Ashley to obtain the video of their argument, and having Josh’s rival as an ally is an added bonus. Josh quickly responds by trying to connect with Austin, bringing Olympic gymnast Suni Lee with him. Suni is seeking help with a persistent discomfort she feels when training for the L.A. Olympics – a slight pain in her lower back and hip flexors that no therapist has been able to diagnose. Austin sweats profusely during their meeting, reminiscent of Albert Brooks on live television. Suni observes this, but Austin claims it’s due to his naturally fast metabolism. Josh then invites Austin back to his place for a private session, hoping they can build a connection and get to know each other better.

Lindsay and Josh fall into their roles as a young couple with ease. Ashley confides in Austin that Lindsay is her only genuine friend at the club. While Ashley details Josh’s flaws – spending Lindsay’s inheritance on his mother’s debts and being addicted to OnlyFans – Austin counters that they aren’t exactly innocent either. He reminds her they blackmailed someone for her promotion, forged his personal training license, and he’s even relying on ChatGPT to help him rehabilitate a top athlete. He suggests there’s more to the story, and maybe Josh just struggles to communicate. Austin realizes Lindsay is likely using their newfound friendship for her own gain, but Ashley refuses to consider it. She’s already skilled at manipulation and manages to send Austin away for tea and a heating pad by feigning a minor cramp.

Josh and Lindsay are caught in a cycle of escalating conflict, a pattern they both recognize as damaging to their marriage. Shortly after deciding to divorce, they begin using underhanded tactics against each other. Josh discovers, through friends, that Lindsay questioned Meredith about a video involving someone named Penelope. One of those friends, Paul, offers to help Josh retaliate. Josh then tells Lindsay he and Paul have already drafted a contract based on their previous agreement, and all she needs to do is sign it for a quick and easy resolution. However, Lindsay refuses until a contract extension is finalized. Josh responds coldly, stating he’ll now handle the matter through their lawyers.

The success of Beef hinges on Lee Sung Jin’s skill in building a season around a seemingly small disagreement. This conflict needs to be relatable enough to feel ordinary, yet significant enough to deeply upset the characters. In the second season, Jin cleverly repurposes the fight video, transforming it from a tool Ashley used against her boss into something Lindsay and Josh can use to their advantage. While Austin distracts Josh with talk of wellness, Lindsay advises Ashley on how to manipulate Ava. They work together to convince Ava to sign up for an expensive treatment package – which will earn Lindsay a commission – and offer to connect Ashley with Dr. Aliabadi.

Austin is helping Josh set up a cold plunge pool that Troy gave him as a gift. Trying to sound knowledgeable about physical therapy despite knowing little, Austin is actually reading information aloud from ChatGPT as he goes. While unpacking the cold plunge, they discover a vial of bufo, a potent hallucinogen derived from toad venom, which Troy claimed could quickly resolve Josh’s anxieties. It quickly becomes apparent that Josh intends to use the bufo to impair Austin’s senses and get a video he wants. However, Austin isn’t fooled. He researches how to guide someone through a bufo trip on ChatGPT while Josh takes it. Josh experiences intense hallucinations, seeing the faces of past partners and ultimately transforming into his mother.

Josh and Lindsay are surprised by Austin and Ashley, who, while also manipulative, seem less hardened and reflect Josh and Lindsay’s own flaws – but still have a desire to improve, something Josh doesn’t believe is possible. He tells Austin his moral compass is so broken he feels unstable. Austin is shocked when Josh reveals his plan to drug him to delete video backups, admitting it would have worked. In a moment of honesty, Austin asks Josh for advice on dealing with a problem involving Eunice. Meanwhile, Lindsay and Ashley celebrate successfully selling a treatment to Ava with champagne. Like Josh, Lindsay realizes she initially thought she wanted something from Ashley, but now understands she doesn’t. Lindsay then shares the painful news of her miscarriage and explains that they never tried for another child because they knew it wouldn’t fix the deep regret of being with the wrong person.

There were clear warning signs in Ashley and Austin’s relationship: frequent arguments, manipulative behavior, and Austin seeking affection elsewhere. Despite these issues, Ashley tells Lindsay she still wants to have a baby with him, though she seems hesitant. They don’t truly know each other – they only know the personas they think they should present – but Lindsay believes this is just the first of many challenges, and a difficult one at that. Meanwhile, as Austin leaves Josh’s house, an elderly neighbor stops him, recognizing his car as the one she saw near the time Burberry the dog went missing. When Austin dismisses this, she offers to show him security camera footage from her phone.

The plot takes a dramatic turn to move things forward, though it feels a bit forced. It’s hard to believe the woman would still be focused on the car, or would approach it on her own at night. However, like many shows on Netflix, the episode ends with a shocking cliffhanger that quickly resolves any plot issues. Woosh tries to take control of the situation, and he gets access to the fake invoices through Ashley, who unknowingly sends them to him instead of Eunice. Eunice was simply annoyed that Austin had helped her at the gym earlier. Woosh, unhappy with life in America, then tries to blackmail the chairwoman, demanding a high-level position in her company in exchange for keeping quiet about the bribes. She agrees, partly because Woosh is her ex-husband’s son and she cares for him – she even kisses him goodbye. But this warmth wasn’t genuine affection; it was a farewell. As Woosh leaves, he’s hit by a car.

To Add Insult to Injury

With Lindsay’s marriage ending, I wonder if her ex, Desmond, will reappear. He was dating someone new last we knew, but will Lindsay’s troubled choices bring her back into a complicated relationship with the unfaithful Duke?

Later in the episode, the chief counsel shares that residents of Ojai fear the land purchase will drive coyotes closer to their homes. This serves as another subtle suggestion that money can be a destructive force.

While discussing pressing matters – including problems with coyotes, a disagreement with Seoul University, the Trochos situation, and outstanding invoices – the chairwoman hears a sound and checks on Eunice and Woosh, who are sleeping soundly. Eunice began the season as the chairwoman’s interpreter, but with Park’s English skills becoming apparent, her role has shifted towards general assistance. Woosh’s death reveals the chairwoman’s cold determination; she won’t let even personal connections or family history stand in the way of her own survival. The details of how Eunice started working for the chairwoman remain unclear, and it’s still a mystery what leverage the chairwoman holds over her to ensure her silence.

The funniest part of this episode, for me, is when Austin accidentally breaks a bone off a skeleton while attempting to learn physical therapy on his own.
