It’s a bit of a shock, but Reed Hastings – you know, the guy who started it all with those iconic red envelopes back in ’97 with Marc Randolph – is stepping down as executive chairman of the Netflix board. He told investors he’ll be leaving in June and wants to dedicate his time to other projects. It really feels like the end of an era for someone who completely changed how we watch movies!
According to Hastings, his most important achievement at Netflix wasn’t any one specific choice, but rather creating a company culture centered around customer happiness. He aimed to build a lasting organization that people would love and that would continue to thrive for many years.
Reed Hastings created the idea for a DVD rental service where customers could keep movies for as long as they liked. He was inspired by a large late fee he received for the movie Apollo 13, which he didn’t want to tell his wife about. He thought, “Should I risk my marriage over a late fee?” Then, while driving to the gym, he realized the gym’s membership model – a flat monthly fee for unlimited use – was a better business approach. Thirty years later, Hastings led the company’s transition to the internet and then into the world of streaming. Now, the founder of the company, known as Big Red, is stepping down.
