As a seasoned crypto investor who has navigated through the digital frontier for over a decade now, I must admit that this recent surge in crypto crime is not only alarming but also disheartening. Having witnessed the meteoric rise of blockchain technology and its potential to revolutionize various industries, it’s distressing to see this darker side of our ecosystem being exploited by criminal networks.

In recent months, a troubling trend has emerged in the world of crypto crime.

As per the recent Chainalysis report disclosed to CryptoPotato, there’s been a notable surge in Chinese merchants involved in disseminating content related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The report highlights an alarming upward trend in CSAM networks functioning from China and the intricate methods these vendors employ crypto to aid their criminal activities.

In a recent report by Chainalysis, it was found that there has been a significant rise in on-chain activity linked to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) vendors based in China. Since the end of 2023, the percentage of global CSAM inflows using yuan has grown, with these Chinese vendors accounting for approximately 38.8% of all CSAM inflows during Q1 2024.

One of the most alarming aspects of this trend is the use of crypto to facilitate these transactions. The report provided a detailed on-chain analysis of payments received by CSAM vendors, illustrating how these operators leverage crypto assets for financial transactions. Buyers can purchase access to CSAM material for as little as $5 for a single day or around $41 for nearly permanent access.

The report points out that a significant number of these Chinese wallets are quite new, with some originating in mid-2023. This implies that these networks aren’t merely leveraging existing frameworks; instead, they’re actively growing and inventing innovative methods to avoid detection.

It’s been discovered that certain CSAM (Crypto Service Automated Marketplaces) providers utilize quick exchange services when withdrawing funds. As per Chainalysis, these quick exchangers function as non-custodial platforms, but they are significantly easier for users to navigate compared to their decentralized counterparts. These services usually offer a wider range of options than traditional exchanges and instantly convert funds.

Huione Guarantee: A Major Hub for Cybercrime and Fraud

Chainalysis has observed an increase in the utilization of Chinese-speaking marketplaces and money laundering operations, such as Huione Guarantee, an online marketplace associated with the Cambodian company Huione Group. As previously mentioned, Huione has been uncovered as a major contributor to cybercrimes like the distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and pig butchering scams.

Since 2021, this platform has handled transactions worth over $49 billion in cryptocurrency. It functions as a peer-to-peer marketplace that links buyers and sellers without scrutinizing the authenticity of listed items. This service has seen widespread use among criminal networks involved in lucrative scams and illegal activities.
