Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Footage Reveals First Look At Amy Rose & Jim Carrey’s Robotnik Return

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 just got even better.

At CinemaCon, Paramount shared details about the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie, which is scheduled to hit theaters in March 2027. The story will follow Sonic and his team as they team up with a new friend, Amy Rose (played by Kristen Bell), and face off against a new enemy, Metal Sonic.

Paramount recently showed a short preview of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 at CinemaCon. The footage included a glimpse of Jim Carrey reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik, who dramatically declares, “Robotnik…saves…world!” It also featured Kristen Bell as Amy Rose. Though brief, the preview confirms Carrey will return as the same Robotnik character from earlier Sonic films.

The ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 revealed that Amy and Metal Sonic will be in the next movie. Although the plot hasn’t been announced, many believe it will be based on the 1993 video game Sonic CD, where Amy and Metal Sonic first appeared. It’s currently unknown whether other parts of that game, such as the Time Stones, will play a role.

A preview shows that Robotnik, despite seemingly dying in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, will return for the fourth movie. He mentions saving the world, which means this won’t involve alternate realities or time travel – it’s the same Robotnik we’ve seen before.

Despite the mystery of how he lived, the video suggests this character will play a major role in the upcoming story. He won’t be alone, though – several familiar faces are returning, including Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Keanu Reeves as Shadow, James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, and Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone.

The upcoming Sonic movies will feature Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, with Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman, Matt Berry, and Richard Ayoade also joining the cast. Kingsley and Offerman will be providing voices for characters, but it’s currently unknown who will play Metal Sonic.

The latest movie seems like a major turning point for the Sonic franchise, and Paramount is already planning to build out the universe beyond just Sonic himself. A separate Sonic spinoff movie is scheduled to come out on December 22, 2028, though details about the plot are still unknown. This shows Paramount has big ambitions for the future of the franchise.

Okay, so with Robotnik, I’m really confused about where he stands this time. He keeps talking about saving the world, which is weird. Is he a good guy now? Or is this some kind of trick? I remember he actually helped Sonic take down his grandpa, Gerald, in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but honestly, that doesn’t mean much. He could still be plotting to take over everything, you know – ‘save’ the world then rule it. We’ll just have to wait and see if that’s what he’s up to.

Considering his funny look in the CinemaCon preview and the intimidating voice he used in the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, it’s likely the sequel will once again feature him as the main villain. But it’s still unclear if Metal Sonic has his own agenda, and that’s something the movie could reveal when it’s released.
