Have expectations for reboots sunk as low as they can go? Maybe. But then the Street Fighter trailer dropped, and suddenly everyone – even people like me who aren’t familiar with the characters – is really excited.
Many adaptations like this often lean into gloomy stories and muted colors, but this Street Fighter movie feels like a deliberate choice to be fun and lighthearted. It’s packed with over-the-top action, vibrant visuals, and, let’s be honest, a lot of Noah Centineo without a shirt. This first look at Kitao Sakurai’s film is surprisingly encouraging. It might not be an awards contender, but we predict Street Fighter will be the big event this fall.

If you’re a fan of relaxing games like Stardew Valley rather than action-packed fighting games, this movie still has something for you. Street Fighter is, unsurprisingly, a fighting game brought to life on screen. The original game let players choose between Ryu and Ken, and this movie follows that tradition with Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo playing those roles. They’re brought together by Chun-Li (played by Callina Liang) to compete in a large tournament against a diverse group of fighters, including some popular faces like Jason Momoa and David Dastmalchian, and others you might not be as familiar with. You might also wonder about Eric André’s involvement – the director has a history of working with him on shows like The Eric Andre Show and the film Bad Trip, suggesting a comedic approach. Street Fighter hits theaters on October 16th, giving you time to brush up on your fighting game skills – or just enjoy the show!
