Created by Dan Harmon, Community is a funny TV show that aired for six seasons. It’s set at a community college in the made-up city of Greendale and focuses on a study group made up of seven people from very different walks of life. The show featured a talented cast, including Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Joel McHale, and Jim Rash. Chevy Chase played Pierce Hawthorne, the oldest member of the group, for the first four seasons.
Chevy Chase had been a very famous actor for many years, and was arguably the most recognizable face on the show Community. However, he was unexpectedly fired from the series. Here’s the story behind his firing, and whether there’s any possibility he’ll appear in the planned Community movie, assuming it ever gets made.
Chevy Chase Stood Out in His Role as Pierce Hawthorne

Chevy Chase rose to fame starting in the late 1970s and remained a popular comedic figure through the early 1990s. He was an original cast member on the very first season of Saturday Night Live in 1975, earning three Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on the show. He also appeared in a number of successful comedies, becoming known for playing memorable characters in films like the National Lampoon’s Vacation series, Caddyshack (1980), Fletch (1985), and Three Amigos! (1986).
After a long period without a hit role – dating back to the early 1990s – the actor’s appearance on Community as the wealthy Pierce Hawthorne was considered a glamorous return to form. He played the character in 83 episodes. However, portraying a deliberately unlikeable, and often ignorant, character may not have been the wisest choice. Pierce Hawthorne is an older, extremely wealthy man who attends Greendale Community College to alleviate his boredom and loneliness.
Pierce exhibits many unpleasant qualities commonly associated with older, prejudiced men – specifically, he’s misogynistic, homophobic, and racist. He also doesn’t seem interested in personal growth. While it can be strangely satisfying to watch other characters confront him, and even treat him poorly, that’s always been the role his character played on the show Community.
Dan Harmon and Chevy Chase Butted Heads Constantly

Chevy Chase is known in Hollywood for being a difficult and confrontational comedian. Several people who’ve worked with him, including hosts, actors, and other comedians, have publicly discussed his problematic behavior. For example, after Chase criticized the humor and current cast of Saturday Night Live in a Variety report, Pete Davidson responded with strong personal insults, calling him a derogatory name. Will Ferrell, another SNL veteran, shared that when Chase returned to the show as a guest, he repeatedly insulted the people he encountered.
As a huge Community fan, I was really surprised to hear Dan Harmon talk about how difficult it was working with Chevy Chase. Apparently, things got pretty tense on set. He even walked off during the filming of a really important scene – the one between Pierce and Abed in ‘Digital Estate Planning,’ which is one of my favorites from season 3! He just didn’t agree with how it was going and refused to continue.
Deadline reports that tensions rose between Chase and Harmon when Harmon publicly confronted the actor at the season wrap party. An angry voicemail Chase left for Harmon was then leaked online. Harmon’s unpredictable behavior ultimately led to his firing after season 3, which many believe significantly weakened season 4 – often jokingly called the ‘gas-leak’ year. Ironically, Harmon returned as showrunner for season 5, coinciding with Chase’s departure during season 4.
Racist Comments That Led to Chase Being Fired from ‘Community’

It wasn’t just one thing with Chevy Chase. Donald Glover and Dan Harmon actually talked about what happened on the Community set in a 2018 New Yorker interview. Apparently, Chevy was the first to recognize Donald’s talent, which Harmon said actually fueled a lot of jealousy. I remember reading that Harmon apologized to Donald after a really bad night of Chevy’s offensive comments, and Donald just said he didn’t even worry about it. It was kind of shocking to hear, but it really showed how Chevy’s behavior impacted everyone.
According to Glover, Chase frequently attempted to undermine his performance during filming and made racially insensitive comments off-camera. Glover recalls Chase saying things like, “People find you funnier because you’re Black.”
Watching Chevy felt like seeing someone struggle with accepting the end of an era—a real artist needs to come to terms with their time passing. I can’t help someone who’s desperately fighting it. But beneath everything, I know there’s a deeply relatable person there—almost painfully so.
The situation reached a breaking point during the filming of Community’s fourth season, episode six, ‘Advanced Documentary Filmmaking.’ Chevy Chase became upset with the way the story was developing – specifically, his character’s storyline – and reportedly used a racial slur (though not necessarily aimed at anyone on set). As a result, both Chase and the network decided it was best for him to leave the show, and he did.
Chase’s Side of the Story

After years of speculation about his 2012 exit from Community, actor Chevy Chase recently shared his perspective. In a September 2023 interview on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, Chase surprisingly claimed he barely remembered being on the show. He explained that the producers had specifically asked him to join, and he simply agreed. When discussing why he left the sitcom, Chase continued to share his recollections.
To be honest, I didn’t find the show very funny. It felt a little restrictive, and while everyone had good moments, it just didn’t really make a strong impact on me.
Chase admitted he enjoyed playing Pierce Hawthorne, but he generally preferred to be by himself. He found the daily interactions with the cast challenging, saying it felt like ‘too much’ to be around them constantly. Despite this, Chase believed people didn’t see him as difficult to work with, simply assuming he was ‘okay’.
Okay, so things were pretty messy when this actor left the show – there was a lot of tension with the rest of us. But honestly, from my side, it seems like things are okay with Harmon. I mean, I don’t know if we’re good, but I’ve never really had a problem with him. He can be a bit of a pain, and he definitely has a temper – he even called to apologize! I actually feel good about where we are now, I really do love him. It’s weird though, because I haven’t actually seen him since 2012!
Will Chase Return For the ‘Community’ Movie?

Fans campaigned for years for ‘six seasons and a movie,’ and the show’s creators are delivering with a Community film coming to Peacock. A lot of people have been wondering who from the original cast would be back, and now we have answers. Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong will all return to Greendale. Plus, after a lot of anticipation, Donald Glover has confirmed he’ll be reprising his role as Troy.
Look, everyone’s hoping for some good news regarding cast reunions, but it’s pretty clear Chevy Chase isn’t coming back – and honestly, that’s probably for the best. Beyond the controversies he’s been involved in, his time on Community wasn’t exactly a highlight, and a lot of his former co-stars have been very open about his problematic behavior on set – things like racist and misogynistic comments. It’s safe to say they wouldn’t welcome a return, and I can’t blame them.
Even Harmon has expressed doubt about Chevy Chase returning to the show, suggesting there might even be legal issues preventing it. Although Chase was significant to Community in its beginning, the series demonstrated it could successfully continue without him.
