The Opening to The Expanse Authors’ Latest Sci-Fi Is Free

The authors of the popular sci-fi series, James S.A. Corey, have released the second book in their The Captive’s War series, The Faith of Beasts. The first part of the book is available to read online for free. The Captive’s War began with The Mercy of Gods, published in 2024.

Fans can continue the story right away with the release of The Faith of Beasts on April 14th, immediately following the free preview.

What Is The Captive’s War About?

Corey, the writing team of Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, has explained that their sci-fi trilogy, The Captive’s War, draws inspiration from the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament—a story about the prophet Daniel’s experiences as a captive in Babylon. The first book, The Mercy of Gods, depicts the planet Anjiin being conquered, and its people captured and enslaved by an alien race called the Carryx.

As a big fan of shows like The Expanse, I was immediately drawn into The Captive’s War. What I really appreciate is how the story unfolds through the eyes of several different characters. We see how these captured humans – especially a guy named Dafyd Alkhor and a team of scientists – are coping with their situation and fighting to survive. It’s fascinating to experience their new reality from so many angles.

The Mercy of Gods quickly topped the bestseller lists. Reviewers have celebrated its captivating story and richly imagined world, as well as its powerful exploration of resilience in the face of oppressive governments.

The Captive’s War Is in the Works as a Prime Video Series

It wasn’t long before someone acquired the rights to The Captive’s War from Naren Shankar (showrunner of The Expanse) and director Breck Eisner. They’ve teamed up with Frank and Abraham to form a new company called Expanding Universe, and this deal happened through them.

Expanding Universe aims to create large-scale science fiction stories with detailed worlds and compelling plots, designed for various media like movies, games, and books,” Eisner explained when the company was first announced. “The Captive’s War is an ideal project to begin with, showcasing our approach.

Shankar explained that The Expanse team created a detailed and engaging world with compelling characters and emotionally powerful stories, all while keeping costs reasonable. Now, they’re applying that experience to new stories and different platforms.

I recently learned something fascinating about The Expanse. Apparently, it didn’t start as a TV show at all! It began as an idea for a video game, then morphed into a role-playing game, eventually becoming the novels we know and love, then the series. According to creator Franck, that winding path actually serves as a model for how they’re developing new projects within the Expanse universe now – it’s like they’re intentionally letting ideas evolve organically.

We’ve already got some great projects lined up, including original stories, adaptations of existing novels, and the chance to update classic science fiction for a new audience. If we succeed, we can introduce a whole new generation to the genre on screen.

The Faith of Beasts is on sale now. The Expanse is streaming now on Prime Video.
