Dairy Queen becomes latest to use AI in drive thru

Dairy Queen is using more AI chatbots at its drive-thrus as fast food restaurants increasingly try automation to serve customers faster.

Dairy Queen started testing a new technology with Presto last year in a few of its restaurants. Now, based on those initial tests, they’re expanding the program to dozens of franchise locations with drive-thrus across the U.S. and Canada, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Restaurants are starting to use artificial intelligence more and more to work faster, make fewer mistakes, and increase how much customers order, especially when they’re busy.

Dairy Queen expands AI drive-thru chatbot test

This chatbot helps customers place orders, recommends extra items, and confirms orders to make sure everything is correct. Dairy Queen’s IT executive vice president, Kevin Baartman, says that initial tests showed the system significantly boosted customer satisfaction – by double-digit percentages.

Presto reports that its AI can take orders with about 90% accuracy. The company believes this is better than a human employee, especially when you consider things like welcoming customers, suggesting extra items, and getting the orders right.

The chatbot always repeats order details to customers, something that human employees occasionally forget to do.

Dairy Queen is working to make drive-thru service faster and help customers order more. They also believe this new technology will allow restaurant staff to spend more time getting orders ready and ensuring accuracy before customers receive them.

Dairy Queen isn’t the only fast-food chain experimenting with voice-activated AI at its drive-thrus. Companies like Presto are testing the technology with Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s, and Wendy’s is working with Google on a similar system.

Several other fast-food chains, like Taco Bell, Checkers, and White Castle, are also testing AI ordering systems at some of their restaurants. However, Taco Bell paused its rollout after a customer placed an unusually large order for 18,000 water cups.
