As kids, we learn that responding to a wrong with another wrong doesn’t make things right. While that’s good advice for simple disagreements, it feels different when you’re struggling to survive in a world where the wealthy take advantage of every opportunity – whether it’s through legal loopholes or outright scams. It makes you wonder why you shouldn’t fight back the same way. Ashley had this realization when Austin pointed out the flaws in our current economic system, and Josh will come to the same conclusion in this episode. Lindsay and Austin take it a step further, suggesting that manipulation isn’t limited to finances; people can be manipulated, too.
In Lindsay and Josh’s living room, the two couples faced off, mirroring each other’s positions. Ashley and Lindsay were acting poorly, while Josh and Austin were trying to do the right thing. Austin and Ashley had video evidence of a fight between Lindsay and Josh, and they wanted to use it to get Ashley a better position at the club. When Josh pointed out that Ashley didn’t finish high school, Austin carefully explained that, with the recent changes at the club and the new ownership, it would be best for everyone if things stayed as they were regarding the incident. This didn’t convince Josh and Lindsay, who told them to take the issue to HR and let them decide who to believe, also pointing out that Ashley and Austin were trespassing. Switching to a more direct approach, Ashley simply showed them the video. The truth was undeniable: the fight had been as bad as they said.
Ashley felt incredibly secure knowing a new job offered a $45,000 salary, paid time off, and health insurance – it felt like they had everything they needed. Austin, however, wasn’t sharing her relief. He felt overlooked and unimportant, as if his own needs hadn’t even been considered. Ashley quickly pointed out that they were in this situation because of her serious health issue requiring surgery. After Austin backed down, she insisted they never argue like that again. While their disagreements aren’t as explosive as Josh and Lindsay’s, they’re more damaging because unspoken frustrations build up. Throughout the episode, Austin’s anger grew; he was tired of feeling like he always had to support Ashley. He reminded himself that he was a celebrated college football player, even winning the Butkus Award in 2015!
Austin tries to relax by lifting weights, but gets annoyed when Ashley repeatedly asks him for favors while he’s trying to unwind – she wants him to find a doctor in her insurance network, schedule an appointment, and order clothes from H&M. She pressures him by saying her job is crucial to their future, especially since her promotion involved firing a long-time employee, Deb. Meanwhile, club members are unhappy with the new drink cart attendant. All Josh wants is for Ashley to delete a video she has. She brings him old paperwork from Deb’s previous job, seemingly to show how much she’s taking on, and Josh tells her he doesn’t need her to prove herself, just delete the video. She offers to delete it from the cloud if he’ll help her learn the ropes of her new role and put a nameplate on her office door. As Lindsay predicted, Ashley is using the video as leverage against Josh.
Once Ashley and Austin left, Lindsay and Josh reviewed Josh’s contract, which states he could be fired for any actions that damage the company’s reputation, even outside of work. Lindsay, known for holding grudges and getting people fired, believes Ashley and Austin will use a video to blackmail them. Josh, however, thinks giving Ashley what she wants is the easiest solution. Lindsay suggests this could be a chance for a fresh start – maybe Josh could leave the club and they could focus on their bed and breakfast. She wonders if this situation might actually be a positive thing. But Josh refuses to consider quitting his job, leaving Lindsay to question what’s keeping him there.
Everyone likes Josh, but they constantly remind him how easily he could lose his job. He’s learned the chairwoman is interviewing potential replacements, and shares this with his friends during a card game with Benny Blanco, Baron Davis, and Michael Phelps. They’re all playing themselves in a memorable scene, and Josh serves them drinks from a rare, expensive bottle. He initially refuses to join the game, but Michael Phelps insists, and Josh ends up losing a significant amount – more than $5,000. This creates a financial crisis for Josh, forcing him to sell his prized sports collectibles and musical instruments to cover the debt. To make matters worse, his sister, Sara, discovers the joint account they shared with their late mother is overdrawn while reviewing the finances. She confronts him, letting him know he doesn’t need to send her money to compensate for not being there the night their mother died. As Josh becomes more and more frustrated, the constant noise of a leaf blower outside his office hints that he’s on the verge of losing control.
Lindsay is desperate for her husband to leave the Monte Vista club, and it’s becoming clear why. Despite hints of a privileged British upbringing – a past relationship with a Duke and a family home in Cornwall – the club members treat her like staff. This is incredibly humiliating, and fuels her to take action. Over iced tea, she tells Ava and her friends that Ashley is now their dedicated concierge, available for any request, no matter how small. Immediately, Ashley is bombarded with requests – sunscreen, lost AirPods – while she’s already trying to figure out details about an upcoming Carnival event from a questionable source. As the group discusses the new tennis pro, Woosh, Lindsay discovers he’s been texting everyone, hoping to sell expensive Korean skincare to the wealthy members. Someone even suggests Lindsay ask him about a $40,000 trip to Seoul for cosmetic procedures, subtly implying she could use it.
Unaware that a Duke is eager to meet her, Lindsay reconnects with Desmond, sending him a flattering selfie while at home with her dog, Burberry. She starts to consider seeing him, but first agrees to meet with Woosh. He gives her sunscreen, asks her to apply it to his back, and then presents her with a travel package. Lindsay attempts to negotiate a better deal, but Woosh won’t budge. She explains to him that she desperately needs the trip to boost her confidence and social standing. When appealing to his emotions fails, she shifts tactics, wondering if Chairwoman Park – who has supported Woosh since childhood – is aware of his inappropriate behavior towards women at the club.
I’m starting to see Austin change, and it’s unsettling. He’s realizing how easily he can mess with people’s heads. He and Ashley keep telling themselves what they did wasn’t blackmail, but it’s clearly affected him – something just clicked inside him. I watched him doing those workout videos, repeating how to do glute bridges, right as Ashley got home from work. He acts like she’s imagining things when she says they’re drifting apart, insisting it’s all in her head. Then came the passive-aggressive move – he went to Goodwill for Ashley’s work clothes instead of H&M, claiming it just ‘didn’t feel right’ to get them from a store and return them. It’s a small thing, but it feels like the start of him deliberately trying to manipulate her. And it is manipulation. Later, Ashley finally starts to pick up on what’s happening and reveals a plan of her own – one she’d actually come up with earlier that day.
While touring the club’s gym with Chairwoman Park, Ashley mentions her fiancé, Austin, is a personal trainer. Park initially seems uninterested, but Ashley quickly gains her attention by revealing Austin is also half-Korean. When Park points out her husband needs physical therapy, not a trainer, Ashley swiftly adds that Austin is qualified as a physical therapist as well. This impresses Park, who then confides in Ashley that she is fluent in English. The three women – Ashley, Park, and her interpreter, Eunice – agree Park will try a session with Austin, essentially an audition for a permanent physical therapist position at the club. Back home, Austin worries about the time it would take to get properly licensed. Ashley suggests using a fake license for the time being, determined to improve their situation together and bridge the growing distance between them. Austin, becoming skilled at manipulation, dismisses her concerns, claiming her feelings are unfounded.
Austin almost backed out of meeting Park, but Ashley reminded him they had something to hold over the person who controlled his licensing – and that person approved it without even checking it. When Ashley gave Josh the fake certificate, he was preoccupied with his own plans. While changing the security questions on his account with his mother, he realized that any payment under $5,000 only needed the general manager’s signature – meaning only he, and Ashley (who mailed the invoices, though Josh didn’t think she’d notice anything, dismissing her as a careless young person) would know if a check for $4,999 was sent to his mother. He became so sure of his plan that he told Ashley, as she was leaving, that she was capable of handling more of Deb’s work – the more she did, the easier it would be to send out fake invoices.
Later, Josh tells Lindsay, “Everyone is out to get theirs.” He feels it’s time they got some payback from the arrogant people at the club. Lindsay has already begun her own plan: with Woosh translating, she has a video call with Dr. Kim (played by the wonderful Song Kang-ho), a Korean plastic surgeon who happens to be married to the club’s owner. He suggests several procedures, but Lindsay decides to start with just laser treatment, which Woosh is grateful for since he’s footing the bill. Even when Josh shares his plan to steal “thousands of dollars” from the club, Lindsay is thrilled and feels incredibly understood, passionately kissing him. Josh tells her what she wants to hear: they can’t simply run away, they need to rebuild their lives. He questions why he should work so hard while people like Troy, Benny Blanco, and Michael Phelps get richer by living a “buy-borrow-die” lifestyle.
This episode explores how status brings power, and power often creates the feeling of being above the law – a frustrating reality for anyone who questions why things are the way they are. The episode, titled “A New Starting Point for Further Desires,” makes it clear that things are about to escalate. While stealing from a country club might be manageable, murder is a completely different story. As Austin prepares for his first physical therapy session with Park, the Chairwoman unexpectedly asks Eunice to take over. Meanwhile, Dr. Kim is facing a major crisis, having just accidentally killed a patient during surgery.
To Add Insult to Injury
Okay, so the latest episode really leaned into Josh’s struggles. We saw him briefly break free from porn, deleting his account, but predictably, old habits die hard – he’s right back at it, pairing it with his usual run and, ironically, a podcast about the dangers of porn. The irony is thick enough to cut with a knife! Then, just as he heads out, things get seriously weird. He trips while running and has a face-to-face encounter with a coyote! It’s a pretty jarring moment, especially considering it happens right after he discovers an old, incredibly sweet card covered in childhood photos of him and Lindsay. The episode really sets up a lot of internal conflict and, frankly, a very strange juxtaposition of moments.
Is Dr. Kim’s personal issue going to prevent him from joining the club? The chairwoman appears to be remodeling the club to suit her husband’s needs, changing the gym, rooms, and decorations. She jokingly told Ashley she married someone much younger expecting to outlive him, but actually, he’s the one with more health problems. It almost seems like she’s turning the club into a private recovery center for him. I’m also disturbed by a cut on the deceased patient’s face and the way he stared at her, leading me to wonder if he, like Austin, wasn’t properly licensed. But perhaps I’m just being overly suspicious after watching too much of that show, The Pitt.
