A recently discovered Sony patent shows a PlayStation controller with a unique design – it can change shape when you squeeze, twist, or pinch it.
A couple of years ago, we covered a Sony patent for a unique controller that could change shape. It featured two spherical grips connected by a tube. Players would control the game by squeezing or twisting these grips.
Cheat Happens recently discovered a new Sony patent suggesting the company is still exploring adaptable game controllers. This new design, though quite different in shape from previous attempts, is another device that players can manipulate by squeezing, twisting, or pinching.
We’re aiming to create controls that go beyond what current options – even advanced ones like the DualSense – offer, delivering a much more immersive experience.
Sony patents pinchable controller design
This time, the buttons are designed as a flexible grid. There are 25 individual buttons arranged in five rows of five, and they can be connected in different configurations based on the software’s needs.

So, apparently these parts of the controller aren’t fixed – you can actually bend, squeeze, lift, and push them around. The patent details how you’d be able to change the controller’s shape while you’re playing, which is pretty wild! It means you could customize the feel on the fly.
How could this actually be used in a video game? The patent describes one way: you could drag a point on the screen to build a volcano on the landscape, and then rotate that point to make the volcano erupt.
The patent also mentioned that the device could be completely covered with fabric when in use.
Each point in the system creates unique vibrations to mimic in-game sensations, like the impact of a gunshot or the rumble of an earthquake.

Just like with any patent, there’s no certainty this will actually become a real product soon. Sony has patented many ideas – like a PlayStation controller with a completely touchscreen surface – but most of them never get developed.
