The show kicked off its fifth season on April 8th with a two-part premiere, and the third episode became available on April 15th. Viewers were surprised by a strikingly realistic connection within the episode.
The third episode of the series, titled “Every One of You Sons of Bitches,” features the villain Homelander starting to see himself as a messianic figure, much like Jesus. While this fits with his already inflated ego, the timing is notable, as a similar AI-generated image of Donald Trump as Jesus circulated online just days before. However, according to creator Eric Kripke, this storyline wasn’t inspired by current events; the episode was actually written before the election.
Homelander’s Jesus Parallel With Donald Trump Is a Coincidence
Since the very beginning, this villain with a strange obsession with milk has consistently surprised viewers. His growing power became clear in Season 4, hinting at even bigger threats to come. In a pivotal scene from Season 5, Episode 3, he experiences a vision of Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue), who encourages him to believe he’s destined to be worshipped as a god by the American people.
Kripke explained they actually wrote this episode two years ago, before the election even happened. The idea came from discussions about Homelander’s development and where his character arc was headed, particularly as he’d been increasingly unstable throughout the series.
The creator of the show worried that a particular storyline would be too extreme and unbelievable, even admitting it seemed “crazy” initially. He feared viewers would see the character as overly cartoonish. However, current events kept surpassing the show’s attempts at satire, leading him to jokingly wish the world – and specifically the Trump administration – would stop unintentionally promoting the show by being even more outlandish than its fictional content. He finds it tiring to constantly try to outdo reality for satirical effect.
Laz Alonso, who plays Mother’s Milk on the show, recently discussed how surprisingly relevant some of their storylines have been. He told Gold Derby that last season, an episode dealing with a presidential assassination nearly couldn’t air because it coincided with a real assassination attempt during the election period.
They filmed Episode 3 over a year ago, and it’s been shocking to see how much of it is now mirroring real-world events. The show is meant to reflect society, not necessarily teach lessons, but sometimes that reflection is eerily accurate – and this is a perfect example. It’s just unbelievable!
Homelander’s Donald Trump Parallel Went Viral
It’s no surprise that people online reacted strongly to the parallels between the character Homelander and the current president. One X user perfectly summed it up, noting the striking timing of Homelander’s desire for god-like status coinciding with the president posting an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus – calling it a truly cinematic moment.
Someone pointed out the eerie timing of a recent episode of The Boys. They noted that episode 3 featured a storyline referencing Homelander and Jesus, immediately following Donald Trump’s post of a Jesus image. Knowing the show finished filming last year, they found the mirroring of current events genuinely unsettling and shared their concern with several laughing emojis.
I was completely floored by a recent scene in The Boys. It showed Homelander having this delusion where he believed he was Jesus, and it aired just days after Donald Trump shared a photo of himself as Jesus – all because of a feud with the new Pope! Honestly, the satire felt way too real. It’s just…narcissists doing what narcissists do, isn’t it?
