The HBO series The Pitt always feels incredibly busy. The emergency room scenes are chaotic, and even when the focus is on one medical case, the background activity suggests there’s much more happening off-screen. Recently, dedicated fans started closely examining every detail, leading to a viral post on X about a cat picture hanging in the break room of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The post, asking “Who is that cat?”, highlighted the feline’s unexpected presence. While unconfirmed, someone claiming to be a crew member explained that the staff were allowed to decorate the break room with photos of their pets.
Nina Ruscio, the production designer for The Pitt, revealed that the cat stealing scenes is named Viper and belongs to Caitlin Nunes, a production assistant in the art department. Viper is one of several pets brought in by crew members to brighten up the show’s break room. Ruscio and her team find it amusing that fans are more captivated by Viper than by all the detailed work they did to realistically recreate a hospital emergency room. They’re incredibly meticulous about every detail, and Ruscio isn’t surprised anymore by the things fans notice. She even received an email this morning from Seventh Generation dish soap – they spotted their product on the counter in the break room!
The set’s decoration with pet photos started as a simple solution to a design problem, according to Ruscio. Matt Callahan, a set decorator for The Pitt, didn’t want the break room refrigerator to look empty and impersonal, so he turned it into a message board. He naturally included pet photos, as that’s something real hospital staff would display. Rather than using generic stock photos, Ruscio asked the crew to submit pictures of their own pets, and the response was fantastic. Now, the show’s production office features a large, six-by-four-foot bulletin board called “Pitt Petts” (with the intentional double ‘t’), and it’s constantly growing with photos of crew members’ beloved animals. People are eager to have their pets featured on the show, and submissions keep coming in.
TV sets often have photos of loved ones, but adding them isn’t as simple as just sticking them up. There’s a lot of legal paperwork involved – each photo needs official permission from the photographer. Despite the hassle, it’s a nice way to let the crew feel involved in the small details of the show. Currently, the break room features photos of pets, including Lumpia, a dachshund belonging to the set decoration buyer, Stephanie Wagner, and the late Coleen, a husky mix owned by set dresser Stephen O’Malley, whose picture remains displayed on the refrigerator.
Hospital sets don’t usually allow for much personalization, but production designer Ruscio always looks for ways to add realistic details. For example, the photos at Nurse Dana’s desk are actually pictures of actor Katherine LaNasa’s children. She often asks people to contribute items – it wasn’t just the pets in the break room that came from these requests. When actor Patrick Ball’s mother, Lee Ann Ball, a real-life registered nurse, visited the set of The Pitt, she casually mentioned that hospital break rooms always need a sign reminding staff to clean up, like “Your mother doesn’t live here.” Ruscio loved the idea and immediately asked Lee Ann to write it down, and they posted it above the sink.
Ruscio is thrilled by the chance to add such intricate details, especially because 95% of The Pitt is filmed on a meticulously crafted 24,000-square-foot set – every inch of which has been carefully considered. While she always strives for this level of detail in her work, The Pitt is unique in that the audience is just as engaged with it as the production team. She describes it as something that has truly come alive, a collaborative experience that she and the entire team are proud to be a part of.
