After a seven-year absence, a new Star Wars movie is coming to cinemas, raising the usual question for big franchises: how much mature content will it include? This film, focusing on The Mandalorian & Grogu, needs to appeal to both children and longtime fans who’ve followed Din Djarin’s story on Disney+. Thankfully, it seems the filmmakers have found a good balance.
The MPA/CARA Film Ratings Bulletin released on April 15th confirmed that Mandalorian and Grogu received a PG-13 rating due to science fiction violence and action. This is consistent with the rating all live-action releases of the series have had since 2005, and it meets fan expectations.

Jon Favreau directed and wrote this film, which stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, with Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Steve Blum also featured. The story centers on Din and his young apprentice, Grogu, who are asked by the New Republic to track down remaining Imperial leaders who are still causing trouble in the galaxy.
The upcoming Mandalorian & Grogu movie deserves a PG-13 rating because, fundamentally, it’s a heartwarming story about a father figure and his child. This emotional connection has been the most popular aspect of the Disney+ series since Grogu was introduced in Season 1, and all of Lucasfilm’s promotional efforts emphasize it. The trailers focused on Din and Grogu’s relationship more than the action, and the tagline “wherever I go, he goes” is proving to be a powerful draw for audiences. A story centered around this kind of bond naturally aims to appeal to as many viewers as possible.
Grogu is a major reason the movie stayed family-friendly. He’s become incredibly popular with both kids and adults, bringing a lot of heart and fun to the story. The trailers already showed him using his powers and getting into playful trouble – things that have made him a huge hit with fans and toy collectors. Considering the film was designed around a character who appeals to young children, a PG rating was almost guaranteed.
The Star Wars franchise consistently receives a PG-13 rating, which has been the standard for every theatrical release since 2005. This is generally due to the science fiction action and violence present in the films. Movies like The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker, Rogue One, and Solo all earned this rating, and the series hasn’t ventured into more restrictive (R) or milder (PG) categories.
The trend of Star Wars films receiving a PG-13 rating began with Revenge of the Sith. Its intense scenes – including Anakin Skywalker’s fiery downfall on Mustafar and the widespread killing of the Jedi – were too strong for a PG rating. The MPA rated it PG-13, and all subsequent Star Wars movies have followed that example.
The original Star Wars trilogy is a bit different when it comes to ratings, and timing is important. A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi were all rated PG, as were the first two prequel films, The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. However, the PG-13 rating didn’t exist until 1984, after the original trilogy had already started. If the PG-13 rating had been available earlier, movies like The Empire Strikes Back would likely have received it.
The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Rating Will Make It More Fun
The upcoming movie, Mandalorian & Grogu, is clearly made for families and looks like it will be a really enjoyable experience. The trailers suggest a good mix of action, heartfelt moments, and humor. We can expect plenty of exciting fights as Din Djarin faces off against Imperial enemies and a dangerous new bounty hunter named Embo. The relationship between Din and Grogu will add emotional depth, and Grogu himself is sure to provide plenty of laughs – he always seems to win over audiences!
Martin Scorsese’s voice work as an Ardennian fry cook is a delightful touch. It’s clear Jon Favreau isn’t aiming for overly serious storytelling, which is perfect for this movie. The plot offers enough substance to interest adults while still remaining family-friendly and enjoyable for everyone.
The filmmakers needed a rating that allowed for both action and drama without alienating younger viewers. A lower rating would have meant cutting back on exciting scenes and emotional intensity, while a higher one would have kept many potential viewers away. The PG-13 rating is ideal because it will likely attract a large audience when the film is released on May 22nd.
