Since Season 3 came out, people are talking about a possible ‘Alice in Borderland Cinematic Universe’ (or AiBCU), meaning Netflix might create several spin-off shows. However, there’s something important you should be aware of.
The second season of the Netflix show finished at the same point as the original manga. This means the new third season explores completely original content, with Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) and Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) being pulled back into the Borderland for more dangerous games.
The conclusion of Alice in Borderland Season 3 hints at the possibility of a new series set in the USA. The director and actors have expressed their interest in continuing with the show if it’s renewed. Because of this, it’s reasonable to believe that a larger cinematic universe could be developed around the franchise.
Similar to the rumors about a ‘Squid Game Cinematic Universe’, the current talk of an MCU-style plan is simply not true.
The ‘Alice in Borderlands Cinematic Universe’ isn’t real
The Phase 1 plan for the ‘Alice in Borderland Cinematic Universe’ that’s been circulating online was created by a fan. This doesn’t mean the series won’t continue – just that this specific outline isn’t official. It’s a fan-made creation, not an actual plan from the creators.
Although the concept of shared cinematic universes isn’t new, Marvel Studios popularized it. Kevin Feige first presented the plan for the interconnected Phases of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films and TV series at Comic-Con events.
A plan has been created for the series Alice in Borderland, outlining Seasons 1 through 3 from December 2020 to 2025. After that, the story will continue with Alice in Borderland USA, which is currently expected to be released in the summer of 2027. This represents the future direction of the franchise.
I was so excited to see Brent Reviews share this on TikTok! Apparently, after the American version of the show, they’re planning a prequel all about the Watchman – you know, the character who first showed up in Season 3. He said it’s expected to come out in winter 2029, which feels like ages away, but I’m already hyped!
The planned content also features Alice in Borderland: Zero, a story exploring how the Borderland came to be, set for summer 2030. This would be followed by Season 4 in winter 2031. Just to be clear: all of this is entirely made up.
While some of these projects could be approved later on, Netflix hasn’t made any announcements currently except for Season 3.
Despite this, people have still been reacting to the picture, and some have even been tricked by it. One person asked, “Why does America have to spoil everything?” while another commented, “Honestly, we didn’t even need Season 3.”
Someone else pointed out, “All the cards are used up, so what happens now?” Many quickly realized it was another imitation, with one person commenting, “THIS IS LITERALLY THE PLOT OF SQUID GAME.” Another viewer added, “It’s clear they simply copied and pasted the title from Alice in Borderland.”
It seems Brent Reviews sourced the image from Reddit, and the original poster clarified it was just a concept design.
Alice in Borderland Cinematic Universe Concept (Prequel + USA + Finale Ideas)
byu/CaptainFatStacks inAliceInBorderland
I’ve been exploring some initial ideas for how a Alice in Borderland Cinematic Universe could be developed, and I wanted to share them to get people’s feedback,” they explained.
I’ve been brainstorming a lot of ideas, and one of the biggest is a prequel that explores how the Borderlands actually *started*. I’m picturing something along the lines of Alice in Borderland: Zero – a story about the very first moment the Borderlands came into existence. It would be awesome to see that origin story!
It’s a bit like a story within a story – are we talking about death, a state between worlds, or something people invented to make dealing with life’s challenges more bearable?
They further explained how the franchise could develop in the future, and one concept was Alice in Borderland: Genesis, described as the “creation myth” of the Borderland. This would explore the origins of the games, showing if it was a large-scale disaster, a planned experiment, or something with supernatural causes.”
They explained that the concluding story in this world could be Alice in Borderland: World / The Final Game. This wouldn’t just focus on people trying to survive within a single city; instead, it would expand to involve entire countries being used as players in a large-scale system of survival and control, and manipulation, they added.
What’s next for Alice in Borderland?
While nothing is official at this time, the people involved with Alice in Borderland have indicated they’d like to revisit that universe, potentially through a worldwide spin-off series or a fourth season. No decisions have been made, but the possibility is definitely on the table.
In an interview with the Radio Times, director Shinsuke Sato discussed the possibility of more seasons. When asked if he’d consider making them, he stated, “I would certainly say yes if you’re asking me whether I’m interested.”
He also mentioned the possibility of creating a manga adaptation of the Alice in Borderland spinoff, Alice on Border Road, which is also written by Haro Aso. Notably, the main character in this spinoff is also named Alice, but the story unfolds in Kyoto, within the same fictional world as the original.
So, Tao Tsuchiya, who plays Usagi in the Netflix show, actually told them she’d be totally up for coming back! She even has a cool idea about what could happen next, which is awesome. I’m really hoping they let her pitch it – I’d love to see more of her as Usagi! It’s a great character, and she nails the role.
She explained that the story starts with a child ending up in a strange place called Borderland, and their parents must venture in to rescue them. The children are completely unfamiliar with this new world, but the parents are. “I have a premise where the child will find themselves in Borderland and the parents have to go in and save them. The kids don’t understand the world at all but then the parents do,” she said.
Children will naturally ask, ‘Who are you? Are you my parents? Why do you understand all of this?’ This can create a feeling of suspicion. However, the games encourage them to support each other as parents and children, highlighting the wonderful nature of family.
If this were just a single show or movie, we’d handle getting the games ready ourselves, without needing a child’s help. However, because it’s a show that will run for multiple seasons, that’s actually possible.
We really want to bring the wisdom and insights we’ve gained over the years into the story. I’m hoping the producers will hear our ideas and consider them! It’s a bit of a shot in the dark, but we’re putting it out there!”
