The release date for when we’ll see Batman in The Brave and the Bold is still uncertain, but one of his enemies is getting his own DC film soon-in less than a year. Filming for Clayface started in late August, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the lead role, with The Social Network’s Max Minghella also joining the cast. Minghella recently shared his excitement about becoming part of “the world of Gotham” and revealed an interesting connection he has with someone working behind the scenes.
Minghella has been doing interviews to promote Shell, the 2025 film he directed, which stars Elisabeth Moss, who also appeared with him in The Handmaid’s Tale. During a conversation with Josh Wilding from ComicBookMovie about the upcoming body horror film, Minghella also talked about his work on Clayface, beginning with this:
I’m having a great time working on this movie. The team involved is incredibly talented. James Watkins is directing, and I’ve admired his work for years. He previously directed Eden Lake, which had a lasting impact on me when I first saw it. Hossein Amini is currently refining the script; I actually produced and directed a film with him a long time ago, so we have a strong connection.

A new connection to the Joker appeared in a picture from the set of the Clayface production, and it’s making me even more puzzled about what role the Clown Prince of Crime will play in the DCU. It seems like there’s a mystery surrounding the Joker’s involvement. I’m increasingly unsure about his place in the new universe.
A set photo of Clayface is giving us a first look at what the character will look like in the upcoming DC film, and honestly, it’s gotten me more excited than I thought it would. It teases the visual design, and it’s quite impressive!
It’s great that Max Minghella already knows Hossein Amini, who was brought in to refine the Clayface script. The DC movie initially came from horror director Mike Flanagan, who first proposed Clayface in March 2023. However, Flanagan’s been occupied with the Carrie miniseries and The Exorcist reboot, which led to Amini being asked to polish the script and Speak No Evil’s James Watkins being brought on as director.
Max Minghella’s praise didn’t stop with that; he also highlighted another person who played a crucial role behind the scenes in developing the Clayface concept, stating:
I’m really excited about this project because Rob Hardy is directing, and honestly, he’s a cinematographer I’ve been a fan of for ages. It’s just a lot of fun getting to work with such amazing people and be a part of the Gotham universe.
The new superhero film will be the first time Clayface appears in a live-action movie, though he’s been seen in live-action TV series like Birds of Prey, Gotham and Pennyworth before. Tom Rhys Harries will play Matt Hagen, who, in this version of the story, is an actor whose face is badly injured by a criminal. He seeks help from an unconventional scientist, played by Naomi Ackie, in a desperate attempt to fix it, and she transforms his body into clay. Max Minghella will portray a Gotham City police detective who is in a relationship with Jackie’s character, and Eddie Marsan has also joined the cast in a currently secret role.
Clayface will be in cinemas on September 11, 2026, just over two months following the launch of Supergirl. While you wait, you can enjoy Max Minghella’s previous work on The Handmaid’s Tale through your Hulu account, or you can watch Shell starting October 3.
