I was really interested to hear James Gunn talk about where things stand with *The Authority*. He admitted they’re having some trouble figuring out how to develop it, and it sounds like they’re considering other options. He reassured us they’re still working hard to find the right place for it within the new DCU, though, so it’s not completely off the table.
James Gunn on why he may not do The Authority as a movie
Look, I’ve been following the development of ‘The Authority’ closely, and it’s been a bit of a bumpy ride. James Gunn has been pretty upfront about that, admitting the script struggled, and that it got sidelined by other DC Universe projects. But I just heard from Gunn himself, in a recent interview with Deadline, that things are potentially back on track. He hinted that a conversation with a talented creator could reignite development, which is definitely encouraging news for fans like me. It sounds like they’re exploring fresh ideas and that’s a good sign!
When questioned about potentially turning *The Authority* into a TV series, James Gunn said it was possible, but explained he’s hesitant to make movies about unfamiliar characters. He believes it’s more challenging to attract audiences to theaters for stories they aren’t already invested in.
The Authority is a DC Comics team made up of heroes who aren’t afraid to break the rules. It was started by Jenny Sparks after the fall of StormWatch, with initial members Swift and Jack Hawksmoor. Later, The Engineer (Angela Spica), the Doctor (Jeroen Thornedike), Apollo, and Midnighter joined the group. Unlike many heroes, The Authority often takes action independently, without waiting for permission from governments or other authorities.
As a big DC fan, I was really interested to hear James Gunn talk about adapting *The Authority*. He mentioned at a press conference earlier this year that it’s been one of the trickiest projects to get right. Apparently, figuring out how it fit with other planned movies, like *Superman*, kept hitting roadblocks. It was tough to nail down exactly *where* this team would live within the bigger DC Universe and kept delaying the script.
When GamesRadar+ asked about rumors that development on ‘The Authority’ was facing difficulties, James Gunn chuckled and confirmed the project wasn’t progressing smoothly. He then highlighted several other DC Universe titles that *are* currently in development, including ‘Supergirl’, ‘Lanterns’, ‘Clayface’, ‘The Brave and the Bold’, ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘The Batman Part II’, and ‘Sgt. Rock’.
James Gunn also revealed he’d scrapped another DC Universe project because of problems with the script. He didn’t say if that project was ‘The Authority’.
