Andy Weir’s Star Trek Comments Get Passionate Response From Crime 101 Writer Don Winslow: “You Owe An Apology”

Star Trek is facing major criticism from Andy Weir, with Crime 101 writer Don Winslow weighing in.

Author Andy Weir, appearing on the Critical Drinker podcast, revealed he’s a huge Star Trek fan. He explained that growing up in Generation X, his science fiction exposure was largely limited to reruns of the original Star Trek and Lost in Space. He felt there wasn’t much new space-based sci-fi until Star Trek: The Next Generation came along.

Rick Weir expressed his dislike for the recent Star Trek series and was pleased when Starfleet Academy was cancelled after its second season, exclaiming, “It’s gone, baby! It’s all gone!” Crime 101 writer Winslow criticized Weir’s comments about the show’s cancellation and asked him to apologize, then shared his thoughts on X.

“Congrats on the success of Project Hail Mary+The Martian. I’m a real fan.

When you achieve success, don’t diminish the work of other writers. To be clear, Alex Kurtzman is a talented writer, creator, and producer, and he deserves an apology from you, as a fellow writer.

Writers support each other – that’s the reason the Writers Guild exists. It’s not right to criticize a fellow writer just because they didn’t choose your idea.

Andy Weir is gaining a lot of attention with the new movie version of his hit sci-fi novel, Project Hail Mary, which stars Ryan Gosling. The film is proving to be a huge success, earning rave reviews and a remarkable 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Weir is also the author of The Martian, which was made into a film starring Matt Damon, and his novel Artemis is currently in development with the same directors who brought Project Hail Mary to the screen – Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Okay, so I listened to this interview with Weir on the podcast, and honestly, it’s gotten a lot of flak. He just shared what he thought, and people really didn’t like it – it caused quite a bit of a stir, let me tell you!

As a viewer, I really enjoy Strange New Worlds – I think it’s a solid show. I didn’t dislike Enterprise, though it felt a bit strange at times. I found Lower Decks to be really fun and entertaining, but I’m not a fan of the other Star Trek series. Interestingly, I once proposed my own Star Trek show to Paramount and had discussions about it with the showrunners and executive producer Alex Kurtzman over Zoom.

I’m not a fan of the recent Star Trek series. The person involved seems lovely, but honestly, the shows themselves aren’t very good. He’s a good guy, but they turned down my idea, so I have no respect for them.

It seems like a disagreement with a pitch from someone named Weir may be why the author now dislikes the newer Star Trek shows on Paramount. While the author is a successful science fiction writer with both popular books and movies, Winslow believes it’s important to support other people working in creative fields.
