The first season of the show was a groundbreaking success for video game adaptations. It proved that quality TV shows and movies could be made from video games, and it set the stage for other popular series like Fallout. Critics and fans alike loved it.
Like many shows, the second season of this one stumbled along the way. It was based on the particularly complex story of The Last of Us Part II, the sequel to the original game, and the show struggled to manage it effectively. The pacing felt uneven, Ellie’s character wasn’t always believable, and the story seemed hesitant to fully explore darker themes. While the video game allowed Ellie to be flawed, the TV show shied away from that. The second season wasn’t terrible, but it didn’t live up to expectations. Perhaps it’s best if the show ends now, before it loses its way.
The Last of Us Is Shaking Up Behind the Scenes
Since Season 2 ended, news about The Last of Us hasn’t been very positive. The biggest disappointment is the departure of Neil Druckmann as co-showrunner. As a creator of the original The Last of Us video game, Druckmann brought valuable insight to the TV series and its characters. However, he didn’t leave due to creative differences; he stated he wants to concentrate on his work at Naughty Dog, particularly his new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Fans began to worry the show was losing quality, and many pointed to Craig Mazin, the show’s co-creator and current lead, as being responsible for some divisive choices – like the casting of Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, awkward dialogue, and significant changes to the original story. However, it’s never been definitively proven that he made these decisions alone, or even if he was involved at all, making it unfair to blame him entirely.
As a huge fan of The Last of Us, I was really excited when I heard they were confident enough to keep the story going. There were whispers that we might get four seasons, and even see the show move beyond the games themselves! But it sounds like those plans might be changing. Casey Bloys, the head of HBO and Max Content, recently told Radio Times that Craig Mazin, the creator, is probably rethinking things…
Fans of The Last of Us are eager for more story content, and that’s great news for the show. It suggests the second game won’t be drawn out over many seasons, losing its impact. It also means the series will likely stay true to the game’s original story, rather than adding new content. While fans would love to see more adventures with Ellie and Abby, they should experience those stories through the games first.
New Casting Developments Disregard a Major Character’s Arc
Another reason why The Last of Us might end after three seasons is concerning. The show recently announced the casting for Yara and Lev, key characters in Abby’s storyline. Unfortunately, the role of Lev, a 13-year-old transgender boy in the game, will be played by a cisgender actress, Kyriana Kratter, which has raised concerns about the show losing touch with its core values.
This isn’t the first time casting decisions for The Last of Us have faced criticism, but this time the concerns are justified. The casting choice not only misses a chance for authentic transgender representation, but also overlooks a crucial aspect of Lev’s character. His gender identity deeply influences his relationships with Yara and Abby, as well as his faith. It’s also central to understanding the Seraphites, a prejudiced group who exile Lev for rejecting traditional gender expectations.
While it’s understandable to have actors who only somewhat resemble the characters of Ellie and Abby, casting a cisgender actress as a transgender boy is problematic. Transgender characters deserve authentic representation by actors who share their lived experiences, not as a costume or performance for cisgender actors. The constant controversies surrounding The Last of Us are concerning, and the show risks being remembered as a promising project ultimately undone by its own missteps.
The Last of Us Seasons 1–2 are available to stream on HBO Max. A third season is in development.
