The Marvel Cinematic Universe is finding its groove with Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This film feels more like a true Spider-Man story than a typical Marvel movie, which could allow Tom Holland’s Peter Parker to grow in new ways. However, it already shares a concerning similarity with the earlier Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi and Marc Webb.
Zendaya’s character, MJ, is a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man films, and it looks like that will continue in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, this could be a problem if it means Peter Parker can’t resist his feelings for MJ—even though he insists they can’t be together—for even a short amount of time. It risks repeating a frustrating pattern from previous movies.
Spider-Man Has a Love Interest Problem
Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men both hurt Mary Jane and Gwen by being hot and cold – offering affection one moment and withdrawing the next – all while ironically claiming they need space. Now, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man seems to be repeating this same pattern.
The new movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, takes place four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. This means Peter Parker has been working as Spider-Man without MJ for a significant amount of time, according to the official story. However, the movie will skip over these four years with a time jump, and audiences will likely only see glimpses of them through a quick flashback.
Watching Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Brand New Day close together makes it harder to accept that Peter and MJ are quickly back together. A Spider-Man movie that came after No Way Home and didn’t heavily feature MJ, or featured her minimally, would have emphasized the weight of Peter’s decision to have everyone forget him and his choice not to immediately reconnect with MJ and Ned.
He’s been desperate to reveal his feelings, and Peter’s closeness to MJ and Ned – especially his painful attempt to appear okay at MJ’s party while watching her with someone else – undermines the strength he showed in hiding his sadness, pretending to be happy, and giving up his own chance at happiness to protect them.
MJ is Likely to Break Doctor Strange’s Spell
The trailer’s final party scene shows MJ has created a detailed board covered in pictures of Spider-Man, suggesting she’s been actively researching him and trying to figure out who he really is. Her comment at the end – that she already figured out his identity once and could do it again – hints that she may soon discover Peter Parker is Spider-Man, perhaps even before the next movie begins.
In Spider-Man: Far From Home, MJ is still wearing the necklace Peter gave her while they were in Venice together. While Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a lot happening, it seems likely that MJ will discover Peter’s identity before it ends.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
