Owlcat Games, known for titles like Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy, is venturing into a new genre with their upcoming game. They aim to leverage their strengths and deliver a unique experience, much like they did with The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.
I recently watched the game’s trailer and learned more about what’s coming. It was great to hear the developers discuss the new features they’re working on.
I’ve had a chance to check out the upcoming game, and I’m really impressed with what the developers have created. Now, let’s dive into some of the specific details they shared during the preview.
A New Take on an Old Formula
Fans who enjoyed the original Mass Effect will likely find a lot to love in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. It builds on what came before while also striving for a fresh approach, maintaining the compelling storytelling the developers are famous for.
This role-playing game takes place in the world of The Expanse, but tells its own unique story with new characters. You’ll be a mercenary working for Pinkwater Security, and your character is one of the survivors of the Eros disaster.
Details about the story are limited right now, but it will center around space travel, a team of companions, and meaningful choices that affect the outcome. Players will be able to explore previously unseen areas within the world of The Expanse, offering a fresh experience even for those familiar with the series.
The game plays a lot like Mass Effect, letting you team up with two companions and combining shooting with special abilities. It feels like a more modern take on the formula, really emphasizing using cover to stay safe. That means thinking strategically and playing carefully will likely be more effective than just rushing into battle.
In the World of The Expanse
It’s worth noting the team collaborated with Alcon Interactive Group, the creators of The Expanse: A Telltale Series. They offered guidance to the Owlcat team on the story and setting of The Expanse.
Many are wondering if the game aligns more with the books or the show. While it takes more inspiration from the show, the game ultimately tells its own unique story. You’ll find some familiar elements, but the main plot and characters are original to the game.
You’ll explore recognizable locations like Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna. Fans of the series will feel instantly familiar with the setting, while newcomers will quickly become immersed in the world of The Expanse. The game is designed to be enjoyable for both longtime followers and those completely new to the story.
New Gameplay for a New Age
Okay, so people keep comparing this new game to Mass Effect, which is cool, but the devs have really promised something different. They’re not just copying that formula – they’re actually updating things, like how classes work, and adding completely new stuff like zero-gravity combat. It sounds like they’re taking what we love about those older games and giving it a serious shake-up, which I’m really excited about!
The game lets you customize your character’s skills more freely and use any weapon you discover. Your decisions, both in how you build your abilities and what you say, will actually change things throughout the game.
Details about exactly how the game will function are still limited. However, while it might share similarities with other games, it’s aiming to be unique and establish itself as a memorable, story-driven RPG that players will love for a long time.
The Upcoming Beta
Similar to their previous games, Owlcat will be holding a beta test starting April 22nd and lasting until the game’s release in 2027. Access to the beta will be limited to players who pre-order either the Collector’s Edition or the Miller’s Pack.

This beta version lets you play through a map called Pinkwater-4 Station and experience the core gameplay features – things like making choices in conversations, fighting, and improving your character and gear. It’s a chance to get a feel for the full game long before it officially releases.
This also lets Owlcat fine-tune the game before it officially releases, aiming to fix any problems that pop up. It’s not a complete beta test, but it will help them test the game on various platforms and address potential issues or concerns players might have before launch.
I’m super excited to announce the Closed Beta for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is coming to Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and PlayStation 5! If you’re a fan of The Expanse universe, or just love sci-fi RPGs, this is a perfect way to get an early look. Keep in mind it’s still being developed, so you’ll be playing a work in progress, and your feedback will actually help make the game even better before it officially launches!
