Spoilers ahead for Paradise season two through episode seven, “The Final Countdown.”
Finding the right actress to play Teri Rogers-Collins in Paradise was a challenge. As the wife of Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown), a Secret Service agent turned survivor, Teri doesn’t have much screen time in the first season, and it’s initially unclear if she even made it through the disaster that devastated the world. However, the hope that she survived is a major driving force for Xavier, and discovering that she did survive fuels his dangerous quest in the second season. Teri needed to be a powerful symbol of hope for Xavier – someone he would risk everything to be reunited with. It was a demanding role to fill.
Enuka Okuma has been a working actress since the early 1990s, steadily taking on more prominent roles. Many viewers will recognize her from appearances in popular shows like Cold Case, Grey’s Anatomy, and 24. She’s perhaps best known for her six-season role as Traci Nash on Rookie Blue, and she’s recently appeared in St. Denis Medical and The Pitt, notably delivering a powerful performance in a childbirth scene. In the second season of Paradise, Okuma explores the complex relationship between Teri and Xavier, as well as Teri’s personal fight for survival. Her character adopts a son, Bean (Benjamin Mackey), and forms a bond with Gary (Cameron Britton), a postal worker who cares for her, though his feelings aren’t reciprocated. Interestingly, Okuma herself didn’t initially realize the extent of her role when she joined the project, as she recently shared with Vulture.
Wow, this season has been wild, but I keep thinking back to the very beginning and that huge twist at the end of the first episode! Honestly, when I auditioned, I had no idea what I was getting into. I really thought it was a straight-up political thriller – I imagined playing the wife of a Secret Service agent, just talking through his day at the White House. That was my understanding of the role! I was completely blindsided by where the story actually went. They even gave me all the scripts for the first season after I’d filmed my scenes. I’d read the pilot, of course, but I deliberately avoided reading any scripts I wasn’t in. I wanted to be surprised along with everyone else! It was such a shock to learn his entire purpose was to find Teri. I was already thrilled to be part of the show, but that twist made me a real fan – I got to experience it unfolding in real time, just like everyone else did.
In the first season episode, “The Day,” my character, Teri, faces a sudden, devastating event and fears she’ll never see her family again. We revisit that emotional moment this season, and I really focused on getting into the right mindset. I spent a lot of time rewatching the scene where Xavier says goodbye to Teri from season one. I wanted to honor the original performance, especially since I had already recorded my side of that conversation back then. I tried to match the emotion as closely as possible. Honestly, working with Sterling K. Brown is incredibly moving – he’s such a talented actor and always brings me to tears! The actual filming day was also quite challenging – it was very hot, and there were sparks flying around while I was filming the scene with the phone. I just let the story and the realistic environment wash over me, and picturing Sterling helped me connect with the emotion naturally.
When season one ended, did you have any idea you’d be returning for a second season? And were you aware that the character Teri was still alive? I was certain I’d be back, but I didn’t know about Teri’s survival.
She could just exist in flashbacks.
Precisely.
This season, we see how Teri and Xavier first met through flashbacks to a hospital encounter. This scene is crucial for understanding their characters and their relationship. From the very beginning of the first season, Teri is presented as strong and independent, and the hospital scene reinforces that. It quickly establishes her personality – she’s determined, thinks for herself, and won’t be easily swayed. The scene focuses on whether she’ll allow Xavier to get close to her. Sterling K. Brown brought a touch of his This Is Us character, Randall, to Xavier, revealing a more playful side to what is normally a very reserved character.
He was the one person who seemed able to get through to Teri, given how guarded she was. I think there was an immediate connection between their characters, and that’s similar to what happened with Sterling and me. We hadn’t worked together much—just a couple of small scenes in the first season—so we were still getting to know each other as we filmed. It felt natural, and it mirrored the way our characters were developing their relationship. Everything just fell into place at the perfect time, which made the whole experience really enjoyable.
When Teri first sees Xavier, I aimed to portray a mix of about five different feelings. There’s curiosity – a sense of ‘Who is this person?’ – but also a feeling of being a little intimidated, like she’s getting into a tricky situation. We initially played the scene with Teri being quite harsh, but we toned it down. We focused on finding the right balance, carefully adjusting how much distance she kept from him, and I think it ultimately worked. The editors used a variety of takes to create a dynamic and engaging performance.
I think Xavier’s persistence and Sterling K. Brown’s performance—showing Xavier isn’t easily upset—make the story work. If Xavier had reacted differently, Teri’s strong personality might have been harder to accept.
That’s exactly what I enjoyed about it. Xavier was sure of his feelings, regardless of whether Teri realized it. He believed she’d eventually feel the same way, and he wasn’t going to give up on that.
The next episode featuring Teri is called “The Mailman.” I was really moved by the scene where Teri is on the phone saying goodbye to her family, and instantly switches to focusing on Bean. It says a lot about her character that she can shift gears so quickly. It’s a chaotic moment – she’s losing her entire life, her family, everything, and believes the world is ending. Seeing Bean becomes a lifeline for both of them. They make eye contact, and his attention immediately draws her to him. It’s pure motherly instinct, but also her desperately needing something to hold onto. She needs to focus on taking care of someone, and Bean gives her that purpose. Ultimately, they end up saving each other throughout their time in the bunker.
Benjamin Mackey was a fantastic scene partner. We had a lot of fun joking around and being silly, but the moment filming started, he became completely focused. He’s a very nuanced actor. It’s not always easy working with child actors – sometimes they can be overly dramatic or seem like they’re just reciting lines. But Benjamin is already incredibly skilled and understands how to build a performance with subtlety. I remember one scene on our first day – I was really going for shock and fear, and he started laughing. I asked him what was so funny, and he said, “Your face!” It was a good reminder to listen to him and trust his instincts. He was right – I was overacting, and he helped me adjust my performance.
I had a lot of close-up scenes with Cameron Britton, so we spent a lot of time discussing our characters and what they knew, or didn’t know, about each other’s feelings. We imagined all the conversations happening off-screen. Cameron is great at focusing on those small details, and we both really enjoyed building that backstory and fully embodying the relationship between our characters. It wasn’t until near the end of filming that we started talking about past projects, and he mentioned he’d been in Mindhunter. I was shocked to learn he played Ed Kemper! I quickly looked it up on my phone and saw a photo of him as the serial killer. It was incredibly impressive, because he’s such a kind person. He’s a really strong actor, and it’s amazing how he can access that darkness and convincingly portray such characters, especially given how genuinely lovely he is.
You know, as a movie fan, I’ve been wondering why Teri would even consider trusting Gary. But honestly, I think everything he does, everything, stems from his feelings for her. And I really believe she wouldn’t have risked getting into that truck with a kid unless she genuinely sensed something good in Gary and felt, deep down, that even with the danger, it was the right thing to do. She just knows he’s a decent person. He’s a good guy who, admittedly, messes up sometimes.
We don’t see much of Teri’s personal life while she’s working at the post office. I wondered what her daily routine was like, and if I imagined that while playing her. I think she really took charge during that time. She focused on making fuel and penicillin, and as the only mother in the bunker, she decided they needed to quickly become a close-knit family. Her mindset was, ‘If we’re going to be stuck here, we’re going to live full lives, love each other, and not just survive, but thrive – becoming a strong emotional unit as well as coworkers trying to get things done.’ It was her goal to bring everyone together like that.
As a fan, I heard there was a lot of discussion about when Teri and Xavier would finally get back together this season. And honestly, I think the timing was absolutely perfect! I read that the writer, Dan Fogelman, was even wondering if it should have happened earlier or later, but waiting until now was the right call. If it had been at the end, it would have felt rushed, and if it had been at the beginning, it just wouldn’t have had the same impact. The long wait made it so much more satisfying! There’s been so much happening with the other storylines, so much to unpack, and just when you thought you couldn’t handle the tension anymore, they finally reunited. It was brilliant!
