NCIS Star Breaks Silence After Leon Vance’s Shocking Fate In The 500th Episode

Be warned – this contains spoilers for the latest episode of NCIS! A major character, Vance, has left the show, and things at NCIS will be drastically different moving forward.

Over its many seasons, NCIS has featured a number of character deaths – not unexpected for a show about a team dealing with dangerous investigations. While Kate Todd’s shocking murder in season 2 was long considered the most impactful death on the show, the season 23 finale, episode 13, titled “All Good Things,” has now surpassed it in many viewers’ opinions.

With NCIS reaching its 500th episode, viewers anticipated something special from CBS. The show had faced challenges, especially after Mark Harmon left, but it appears to have regained its footing during the 2025-2026 season. This wasn’t a simple process; the show needed to adjust and find the right dynamic among its characters to ensure its longevity. The 500th episode delivered on that promise, concluding with the surprising death of a key character who had been with the team for a long time.

Rocky Carroll shared with People that he first learned about his character Vance’s death back in November, before filming began. Showrunner Steve Binder told him the plan was to make the 500th episode of NCIS center around Vance’s passing. The goal was to give the character, who had led the show for almost 20 years, a fitting and heartfelt farewell, and Carroll believes they succeeded. You can read his full statement below:

Around the middle of November, our executive producer, Steve Binder, told me that they were planning something major for the 500th episode of NCIS. He said they wanted to really surprise and shake up the show and its world. The plan involved Director Vance sacrificing himself to save the agency – it was a powerful story.

I was so stunned, I felt like I was floating outside of my own body for a moment. Steve asked if I wanted to hear the rest of the story, but I needed a second to wrap my head around what he’d just told me. I was completely overwhelmed. This wasn’t a situation where I went to my bosses and announced I was ready to leave; it just happened.

Carroll explained that while he didn’t initiate his departure from NCIS, he was surprised by how readily he accepted the decision to write out his character. Despite the quick turnaround, he felt Vance received one of the show’s best farewells. He also appreciated the significance of his character’s death to the overall story of NCIS.

Honestly, I was more surprised to hear the plot than I was by the plot itself. But I immediately liked it! As both a director and someone creative, my first thought was, ‘Wow, that’s actually a really good story – a terrific one, in fact.’

Audiences still appreciate straightforward stories where good triumphs over evil. They want to see clear heroes and villains, and a satisfying resolution where the villains are punished.

The 1000th episode of NCIS featured a storyline centered around Director Vance, who was targeted by someone connected to the very first case of the series. Though he survived, his recent death in the episode “All Good Things” came as a surprise, even though there had been clues suggesting his departure was near. Most fans expected Vance would either retire or be fired, but the reveal by Ducky that it wouldn’t be either of those options was a huge twist.

With so many entertainment options available today, traditional TV shows often struggle to compete with streaming and cable programs. Shows that follow a predictable formula, like many crime procedurals, sometimes get criticized, but that’s often expected with weekly episodes. However, viewers who follow network shows develop a strong connection to the characters, especially long-running ones like Vance, who has been on NCIS since 2008. Thankfully, the writers gave him a satisfying send-off.
