An 82-year-old farmer became an internet sensation after people learned he spent six months commuting 12 hours each day to visit his wife, who was in the hospital.
When a family member is sick in the hospital, it’s natural to prioritize being with them. This often means rearranging your life – whether it’s traveling a long distance, missing work commitments, or staying overnight – to offer as much support as possible.
Chen Achong went above and beyond for his wife, Xue, while she was hospitalized, making a 12-hour round trip to visit her every single day.
According to the South China Morning Post, the 82-year-old farmer made the trip from Zhoushan to Ningbo to visit Xue. He would start his day very early, around 4:30 am, to arrive at the hospital by the 10:30 or 11:00 am visiting hours.

The report states that Chen traveled every day for over three months, simply to spend half an hour with his wife, whom he’d been married to for over 50 years.
To cover his wife’s medical expenses, an 82-year-old man took a resourceful approach, using buses for transportation and preparing food himself to cut costs. He spent around $14,000. Fortunately, people donated over $20,000 to help his family with the financial strain.
According to the South China Morning Post, Chen’s bus fares were eventually covered, and the hospital gave him extra time with his wife before she sadly passed away on March 13th. This happened as he was getting ready to go home after visiting her.
He told CCTV that his wife’s death was incredibly painful, saying it felt like his heart was breaking, but that there was nothing else anyone could have done.
“Whenever I have time, I will visit her grave. She was the best wife in the world.”
Chen’s isn’t the only heartwarming story making the rounds online. Seven dogs, after being stolen, managed to travel over 10 miles back to their families. They stuck together during their journey, ensuring no one was left behind.
