PlayStation’s Pivot Back to Exclusives Is A Good Thing For Gaming

Sony has one of the most valuable brands in gaming. But recently, they seem to be lessening the exclusivity – and therefore the perceived value – of their top games by releasing titles like The Last of Us Part II and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on platforms beyond PlayStation, including PC and Xbox.

Sony’s choice to only release PlayStation games on its own consoles has sparked debate among gamers, with many disappointed they won’t be able to play them on other platforms. Despite the controversy, some believe the gaming world can adapt and overcome this limitation.

Sony Will Compete Better Against Nintendo

For the past few years, there hasn’t been a strong reason to choose between the Xbox Series X/S and the PlayStation 5. Games originally designed for only one system were quickly becoming available on both, which has hurt both Microsoft and, especially, Sony.

Nintendo stands out as the only large gaming company that hasn’t released its games on Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5, and they haven’t made their games available for PC either. While Nintendo has released mobile games like Super Mario Run and Pokémon Go for iOS and Android, the strong performance of both the Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 means they currently have little incentive to expand to other platforms.

I’ve noticed Sony still doesn’t seem interested in bringing their PlayStation games over to the Switch 2, even though they’re definitely paying attention to what Nintendo’s doing. Nintendo’s stuck with exclusives like Mario and The Legend of Zelda for over 40 years, and it’s clearly worked for them – it’s made their position in the gaming world even stronger.

Sony’s choice to offer PlayStation games only on its PS5 (and potentially future consoles) could boost the brand and help it rival Nintendo. Keeping popular franchises like Gran Turismo, The Last of Us, and other well-known titles exclusive to PlayStation makes good business sense.

With both the PS5 and the potential Switch 2 on the market, players will face harder choices about which console to buy. This competition is great for the gaming industry, especially when it comes to comparing the quality of games on each platform. For instance, people might debate whether Astro Bot on PS5 is better than Super Mario Odyssey on Switch as a platforming game.

Microsoft Should Take Notes

Sony continues to make its games exclusive to PlayStation. Microsoft could benefit from following Sony’s and especially Nintendo’s example. Years ago, Xbox distinguished itself by appealing to a more dedicated, or ‘hardcore,’ gaming audience than either Nintendo or PlayStation.

For its first decade, Xbox quickly became the gold standard in gaming. Popular franchises like Halo, Gears of War, and Forza were so appealing that even loyal Nintendo and PlayStation fans often bought an Xbox – especially the Xbox 360 – to play them.

Over the past decade, the Xbox brand has struggled, forcing Microsoft to try new approaches to revitalize it. Surprisingly, this has included releasing Xbox games on competing platforms, like bringing Halo: Combat Evolved to the PlayStation 5. Combined with recent problems, particularly weak marketing, this doesn’t give gamers many compelling reasons to buy an Xbox console right now.

It’s a bit ironic that Halo: Campaign Evolved is coming out in 2026, the same year Sony has decided to keep its biggest PlayStation games only on its own consoles. Considering the current state of the Xbox brand, releasing Xbox games on other platforms feels like a risky move, potentially making it weaker over time – almost like what happened with Sega.

Microsoft would be wise to keep games made specifically for Xbox exclusive to its own consoles. Sega discovered late in its history that maintaining exclusives on the Dreamcast helped preserve its reputation. Microsoft could follow a similar path. While things might be challenging for Xbox, keeping games exclusive would give it a stronger position against competitors like PlayStation.
