The Madison Cast Exit Derails Season 2 Of Taylor Sheridan’s New Hit Western Series

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for The Madison. A key cast member has left the show before season 2 even begins, which is a significant setback for Taylor Sheridan’s new Western. Following the success of the Dutton family stories, The Madison introduces the Clyburn family. The first season of the six-episode series focused on the love story between Stacy (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Preston (Kurt Russell), and Preston’s death dramatically changes the direction of the show.

Neither Paramount+ nor Taylor Sheridan has confirmed whether the show will continue. However, filming for a second season of The Madison reportedly finished before the first season even launched on the streaming service. Given that, along with the show’s positive reception and the cliffhanger ending, it seems likely the Clyburn family will be back. But when it does return, a key character will be absent.

Matthew Fox Is Officially Out As Paul In The Madison

Matthew Fox returned to television by playing Paul, the younger brother of Preston, in The Madison. This role marked his first TV project since his time as Pete Mitchell in Caught. The show heavily featured his character’s connection to the Madison River. Although Paul wasn’t officially part of the main Clyburn family, he was a significant character, making the news that Fox won’t be returning for season 2 of The Madison quite a letdown.

The actor confirmed the news in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, explaining he prefers taking on varied roles rather than committing to a single show for years. He praised the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, calling him a fantastic writer, but ultimately decided to leave The Madison. He felt Paul’s storyline had run its course after the first season and didn’t see a compelling reason to continue with the character.

How Losing Paul Is A Major Blow To The Madison Season 2 & Its Future

The first season of The Madison largely focused on Stacy and her family grieving the sudden loss of Preston. However, the show’s creator, Sheridan, was also subtly laying the groundwork for Paul’s storyline, which could have continued in future seasons. We learned that Paul was also dealing with a painful loss, as his wife had died in a car accident.

Because The Madison already uses a non-traditional storytelling approach, it would have been compelling to see the characters’ lives both before and after the central event, mirroring the story of Paul and Stacy. Developing the show’s narrative in this way could strengthen the overall story, moving beyond the current focus on Stacy’s family. However, it seems unlikely that will happen at this point.

I really think season 2 of The Madison missed an opportunity to delve deeper into the connection between the brothers. In season 1, Russell and Paul had so many scenes together, and it really showed us why Stacy’s husband loved that cabin so much – and why he wanted his whole family to appreciate the beauty of the Montana property. It was a great way to build that emotional connection, and I wish they’d explored that more.

I was disappointed to hear Fox won’t be in season 2 of The Madison, but I’m hoping we still get to see Preston through flashbacks. It would be really interesting to learn more about his past with Stacy. I’m just wondering how they’ll handle scenes set in Montana, since Paul isn’t around anymore – they’re going to have to get pretty clever with the storytelling to explain that!
