As a horror fan, I’m always a little nervous about new releases – you just never know what you’re going to get! Some films live up to the hype, and others… don’t. I was really intrigued by Saccharine, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and honestly, I’m feeling optimistic about the upcoming year. There are at least ten horror movies slated for release that could genuinely be game-changers for the genre. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we get some truly amazing scares!
Send Help
20th Century Studios — released on January 30, 2026
While Sam Raimi’s signature over-the-top horror style is toned down in Send Help, he remains a master of blending comedy and scares into a consistently engaging experience. Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien deliver fantastic performances, skillfully navigating both the funny and frightening moments, making this a strong start to the year for the survival horror genre.
undertone
A24 — released on March 13, 2026
A24 has become known for consistently delivering high-quality horror films, such as Green Room and Hereditary, and their new movie, undertone, lives up to that reputation. What makes undertone different is its focus on sound – the film builds suspense through eerie visuals and emphasizes the experience of listening to occasional podcast recordings, letting the audience’s imagination fill in the gaps.
“And remember, don’t be afraid of the dark; be afraid of the silence.”
They Will Kill You
Warner Bros. Pictures — scheduled to be released on March 27, 2026
Following in the footsteps of movies like Ready or Not, The Raid, and Bullet Train, They Will Kill You offers a fresh take on horror. This blend of scares and action has become increasingly popular, and it will be interesting to see if this film proves why that’s the case.
Hokum
Neon — scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026
Damian McCarthy, the creator of Caveat and Oddity, delivers Hokum, a 2026 horror film poised to be one of the most unsettling experiences of the year. Relying heavily on mood and visuals, Hokum stands out in a current horror landscape often dominated by comedic takes. Its trailers hint at a truly chilling and straightforward horror film – a return to pure, unsettling fear.
Obsession
Focus Features — scheduled to be released on May 15, 2026
Curry Barker, the director of Obsession, shares a similar background to the Philippou brothers who made Talk to Me and Bring Her Back – he started on YouTube. The film’s trailers suggest a comedic exaggeration of teenage infatuation, where a boy’s strong desire for a girl ironically becomes too much for him. Expect plenty of awkwardness and clichés typical of young love to be a central part of the story.
Passenger
Paramount Pictures — scheduled to be released on May 22, 2026
I’m not sure how directly it translates to the game it’s based on, but Passenger really feels like an indie horror experience. Honestly, the marketing has been surprisingly low-key – I only caught a glimpse in trailers before other movies like Primate and Scream 7. And you know what? That might be a good thing. Horror relies on surprise, and trailers often give too much away. Dumping the whole plot on audiences before they even sit down in the theater really ruins the scare factor, and Passenger seems to be wisely avoiding that trap.
Backrooms
A24 — scheduled to be released on May 29, 2026
The first teaser for Backrooms successfully captures the unsettling and strange atmosphere of the original 4chan story that inspired it. While it’s hard to say if the movie will fully capture everything fans love about the Backrooms’ unique, in-between setting, the trailer definitely suggests something promising is on the way.
Evil Dead Burn
Warner Bros. Pictures — scheduled to be released on July 24, 2026
The Evil Dead movies have successfully reinvented themselves with each new installment, starting with Fede Álvarez’s 2013 film and continuing with Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise (2023). The key seems to be introducing a fresh group of characters, a different version of the Necronomicon, and a new, confined location for the horror to unfold. While details about Evil Dead Burn are currently limited, it faces the challenge of living up to the high quality established by the previous films.
Resident Evil
Sony Pictures — scheduled to be released on September 18, 2026
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie likely won’t be the exact adaptation fans hoping for, based on what we’ve seen so far. However, the success of his previous horror films, Barbarian and Weapons, means people will be excited to see it. This is similar to how Jordan Peele became a leading horror director after films like Get Out, Us, and Nope, which blended horror with comedy. Plus, the bar for a good Resident Evil movie isn’t particularly high, so Cregger has a reasonable chance of delivering something enjoyable.
All previous Resident Evil movies and TV shows, aside from the fully CGI movies, are as follows:
- Paul W.S. Anderson’s original franchise — Resident Evil (2002), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017)
- Johannes Roberts’ reboot — Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
- Netflix’s TV show, canceled after its first season — Resident Evil (2022)
Werwulf
Focus Features — scheduled to be released on December 25, 2026
After his films The Lighthouse and Nosferatu, it’s unclear how scary Robert Eggers’ Werwulf will be. Some argue that Eggers’ horror movies—like The Witch, The Lighthouse, and Nosferatu—are more known for their beautiful visuals and historical settings than for being truly frightening, and Werwulf might follow that pattern. Regardless, Eggers’ films are always a welcome addition to the horror genre, offering a deeply immersive experience.
