David Tennant is coming back to play the Tenth Doctor in a series of new audio adventures! According to the official Doctor Who website, Big Finish Productions will be creating 15 hour-long episodes featuring Tennant reprising his iconic role. This means fans will get a whole new set of stories in a classic audio format.
David Tennant jokingly described working with Big Finish as surprisingly simple: you show up, enjoy yourself, and somehow end up saving the world again.
Nicholas Briggs, the creative director at Big Finish Productions, mentioned they’re always hoping David Tennant will reprise his role. However, because he’s a very popular and busy actor, it’s often difficult for him to schedule time to record with them.
We’re thrilled to share new stories, and we’re especially excited to have him back! Briggs says you can expect a wild ride with these latest adventures – fast-paced, funny, and scary audio dramas packed with surprises from the very beginning.
The first twelve episodes will be released over the next six months, starting next summer. The final three episodes will be included in a special box set where the Tenth Doctor will join forces with other versions of the character from the show’s history. While the box set doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, it’s expected to be available around 2028.
David Tennant’s Doctor Who Tenure — Explained
Christopher Eccleston finished his run as the Doctor in the 2005 episode “The Parting of Ways.” Later that year, David Tennant made his first appearance as the Doctor in the special “The Christmas Invasion,” officially taking on the iconic role.
David Tennant played the Tenth Doctor for four years, finishing his run with the two-part episode “The End of Time,” which aired over the Christmas holidays in 2009 and 2010. This was the fifth Christmas special for Doctor Who, and it paved the way for Matt Smith to become the Eleventh Doctor. However, it wasn’t actually Tennant’s last time playing some form of the Doctor.
David Tennant revisited his famous role as the Tenth Doctor in 2013 for the special episode celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary, ‘The Day of the Doctor.’ In this episode, he joined forces with Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and John Hurt as the War Doctor. Then, almost ten years later, in 2022, Tennant returned again in ‘The Power of the Doctor,’ where Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor transformed into a new form.
After the events of the 2023 special, “The Giggle,” where David Tennant’s Doctor transformed into Ncuti Gatwa’s new Doctor, Tennant’s Doctor took a step back. He spent time with Catherine Tate’s family, recovering from his experiences, while Gatwa’s Doctor began his own separate adventures.
