Skittles has done something unexpected in the gaming world: they’ve created a special controller that also works as a real flute. They claim it’s the most physically challenging way to play games so far.
This unique device was created for a marketing promotion and is currently being used by Twitch streamer PointCrow as part of a challenge. However, unlike most novelty controllers, it actually needs genuine musical ability to work.
The game uses a real flute, adapted with gaming controls. Playing the flute – the notes you play, how you breathe, and where you put your fingers – directly controls the game. So, to succeed, players need to actually play the flute like a musician.
That’s where things get intense.
Skittles’ flute controller requires you to learn a musical instrument
The flute controller is known for being challenging to play, requiring careful breath control and accurate finger work. Some even describe it as one of the most difficult controllers to master.
Unlike traditional games with buttons and joysticks, this game requires players to use their physical energy, coordination, and musical skill to do even simple things.
According to Ashley Gill, VP of brands and content marketing, the concept originated from challenge gaming – a world where players deliberately increase difficulty by inventing unusual rules or controllers.
We wanted to create a truly unique gaming challenge: learning to play a real musical instrument to progress. The flute seemed ideal – it’s historically linked to gaming with familiar tunes, but it’s surprisingly difficult to master, which adds to the fun.
We’ve seen strange game controllers before, like the chainsaw from Resident Evil 4, but Skittles’ flute is unique because it transforms gaming into a physically demanding activity. It’s not about how quickly you react; it’s about how long you can play and how well you use technique.
Twitch streamer PointCrow faces a big challenge on March 19th: he has 72 hours to beat several games using a unique controller – a Skittles flute!
It’s not uncommon for streamers to attempt difficult gaming challenges using unusual controllers. For example, Twitch streamer Perrikaryal famously played Valorant and Halo using only her thoughts, after previously completing Elden Ring by controlling the game with her brain activity.
