Mario Galaxy Movie Unveils First Look At Second Non-Mario Nintendo Character

Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie – which earned over $1 billion worldwide – Nintendo and Illumination are building on that world with a sequel. This new film will be inspired by Super Mario Galaxy, and it seems Nintendo is also pulling in characters from other Nintendo franchises, as evidenced by a recent surprise appearance in promotional materials. They’re continuing to expand the Mario universe in exciting ways!

The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie is adding lots of familiar faces like Yoshi, Bowser Jr., and Rosalina. But a recent trailer revealed an even bigger surprise: characters from Nintendo’s Pikmin series will also appear! These plant-like creatures aren’t originally part of the Mario universe, making their inclusion a fun and unexpected addition to the film.

Pikmin are small, plant-like creatures that players command in their games to explore dangerous planets, fight off enemies, and find treasures. When they appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, they looked just like they do in the games – tiny, colorful, and with stems growing out of their heads.

I’ve been a fan of Pikmin since the first game came out way back in 2001, and I was so excited to finally get my hands on Pikmin 4 this year! It’s amazing to think about how long the series has been going. What’s really cool is that Shigeru Miyamoto, the genius behind Mario, created Pikmin too! And knowing he’s also involved with the Super Mario movies, it makes me wonder if he had a hand in shaping Pikmin 4 as well.

The recent reveal that Pikmin will appear in The Super Mario Movie isn’t the first surprise character added to the film. Fans previously noticed R.O.B., a character from Super Smash Bros., on merchandise for the movie, and he also makes a very quick cameo in the latest trailer.

The appearance of Pikmin and R.O.B. hints that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is embracing its galactic theme, bringing in characters and references beyond the typical Mario world – even nods to Nintendo itself. It remains to be seen if these inclusions are part of a larger story or simply fun Easter eggs, but we’ll find out when the movie comes out on April 1st.

Why Are Pikmin in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

Right now, it’s unclear how much of a part the Pikmin will play in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

As a big Nintendo fan, I’ve noticed they love hiding little surprises and connections between their games – especially in The Super Mario Bros. Movie! They’ve been slipping in references to Pikmin in Mario games for years, and it’s usually just a fun little nod to fans, a harmless cameo that doesn’t really affect the story. The Pikmin appearance in the Super Mario Galaxy movie feels like more of the same – Nintendo just having a bit of fun and acknowledging both franchises and its fanbase.

The huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie proved that audiences are eager to see Nintendo games adapted for the screen. Now, Nintendo seems interested in building out its own cinematic universe. A live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is already being made, and there’s a lot of talk about a potential Donkey Kong project as well.

Including characters like Pikmin, ROB, and Star Fox in the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie might be Nintendo’s way of testing how audiences would respond to their own movies.

Because the Super Mario Bros. Movie already includes so many characters and elements from throughout Mario’s history, it’s a natural place to add references to other Nintendo games without feeling forced or odd.
