‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Showrunner Confirms ‘Avengers’ Character Is Key to Street Level MCU [Exclusive]

Before the next Avengers movie comes out this year, Marvel Studios is returning to more grounded, street-level stories with the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. This season officially connects Daredevil’s story to the events of the previous Netflix Defenders series and has stronger ties to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe than ever before. The second episode already included references to Hawkeye and Spider-Man, hinting that characters from this show could appear in future MCU stories beyond New York City. According to showrunner Dario Scardapane in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, a major Avengers character will have a significant role in the new season of Daredevil: Born Again.

As a huge fan of the Daredevil series, I’m thrilled to hear that Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again is really going to connect to the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe! We already know Krysten Ritter is bringing back Jessica Jones, which is awesome, and Detective Mahoney, played by Royce Johnson, will be back too. Everyone’s wondering who else from the MCU might show up, but at least we know it won’t be a completely standalone story. Just a heads-up, I’m about to mention some very minor spoilers from the first episode of Season 2!

In an interview with MovieWeb, Daredevil: Born Again’s showrunner, Dario Scardapane, and executive producer, Sana Amanat, revealed a connection to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in The New Avengers) in the first episode of Season 2. Scardapane explained that the character Mr. Charles, played by Matthew Lillard, has ties to Valentina’s world, which inspired them to highlight that link. He expressed his desire to include Valentina in the show, but noted that casting decisions are made by those higher up.

We established Mr. Charles as someone who exists within the Val universe, and that’s why he’s the one on the phone. Personally, I’d really like to see her character join our world – I even have a story idea in mind. However, those decisions aren’t up to me.

Amanat also mentioned enjoying the connections between different parts of the work and expressed a desire to see more of those relationships as a fan.

It’s good to maintain those connections, you never know when they might be useful. And as fans, we’d definitely enjoy that.

The recent mention of Val in Daredevil: Born Again is significant for two reasons: it connects the Marvel Cinematic Universe to other storylines, and it has major implications for the future of Marvel’s streaming shows. As the CIA director, Val remains a powerful figure, and her connection to the new character played by Matthew Lillard suggests New York City will become even more perilous, particularly with the Kingpin actively causing trouble.

It’s still uncertain how significant Val’s role will be as the season progresses. Notably, Thunderbolts didn’t acknowledge any events from the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, despite both shows taking place in New York City. However, it seems unlikely Daredevil would have been unaware of Sentry’s attacks. Despite any lingering questions about how everything connects, this season promises to be packed with intense action and drama, especially with characters like Val involved. Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 will start streaming on Disney+ on March 24, 2026.
