Tony Soprano, a powerful mobster in New Jersey, was far from a good man. The central character in The Sopranos frequently broke the commandments against adultery and murder – he was just as likely to be having an affair as he was to be involved in violence. Meanwhile, his wife, Carmela, lived a comfortable life thanks to the benefits of his criminal lifestyle.
The show repeatedly showed that having affairs was typical for men in the mafia. Despite knowing about Tony’s mistresses, Carmela was deeply hurt, and their relationship was clearly unhealthy. She attempted to get back at Tony by kissing the interior designer, Vic Musto, flirting with one of Tony’s associates, Furio, and having an affair with her son’s counselor, Robert Wegler, but she couldn’t match his behavior.
Tony was known for having many affairs – even legendary womanizer Wilt Chamberlain would have been impressed. He had the wealth, power, and personality to easily attract partners. So, just who did this mobster have relationships with? Here’s a list of his known affairs, in chronological order.
Charmaine Bucco
Pre-series

HBO
In the early episodes of The Sopranos, we find out that Charmaine (Kathrine Narducci) has been married to Tony’s friend, Artie, for quite some time. It’s quickly revealed that she and Tony have a past. Feeling disrespected by Carmela, who treats her poorly, Charmaine intentionally hurts her by telling everyone that she and Tony slept together when they were both in high school. She claims this happened while she was on vacation with her parents.
Charmaine’s admission reveals that Tony’s cheating wasn’t a recent development. It wasn’t caused by his success or wealth; he’s always been prone to seeking other partners. Throughout the show, it’s suggested that Tony never truly moved on from Charmaine, as he continues to contact and fantasize about her. Charmaine only mentioned their past because she felt some jealousy towards Carmela, but they never rekindled a physical relationship as adults.
Lorraine “Lady Shylock” Calluzo
Pre-series

HBO
In Season 5’s “Rat Pack” episode, we learn that Tony had a past relationship with Lorraine Calluzo, also known as “Lady Shylock.” Lorraine is a tough loan shark with ties to the Lupertazzi crime family, known for aggressively collecting debts. She faces danger when she stops paying a portion of her earnings to Johnny Sack, leading Phil Leotardo to order her murder.
It used to seem like Tony wasn’t attracted to women involved in organized crime, especially after he turned down Annalisa Zucca, a mob boss, in Season 2, citing business concerns. That’s why it’s surprising he didn’t feel the same way about Lorraine. When they reconnect, he shows no lingering romantic feelings, making it clear their past relationship was just a brief encounter.
Irina Peltsin
“Pilot” (Season 1, Episode 1)

HBO
The relationship between Tony and Irina (Oksana Lada) develops slowly over four seasons, captivating viewers with its ups and downs. They move between moments of intense connection and damaging conflict. For much of the story, Irina is drawn to Tony as she tries to find her place in life and understand who she is. Eventually, Tony loses interest, and when Irina discovers he’s been having an affair with his cousin, she reveals this to Carmela.
Irina doesn’t appear on the show consistently, but she outlasts all of Tony’s other mistresses. Tony keeps her around for a surprisingly long time because he genuinely cares for her, and her relationship with Assemblyman Zellman shows she deserves to be treated well. Zellman supports her by paying for English lessons and helping her adapt to life in America. Unfortunately, Tony won’t let them be happy together, and he publicly humiliates Zellman by physically assaulting him. Predictably, the couple breaks up after this incident.
Connie DeSapio
“House Arrest” (Season 2, Episode 11)

HBO
Connie DeSapio, who goes by Renee Props, starts working as an office assistant at Barone Sanitation, a garbage company secretly used by Tony’s associates for criminal activity. Tony meets Connie while visiting the owner and is instantly attracted to her. Following a doctor’s advice to manage his stress, the scene shifts to Tony and Connie having sex at the office.
The humor surrounding Connie stems from the idea that she’s presented as unattainable. When Tony compliments her appearance, he’s told she’s deeply religious, implying he wouldn’t have a chance with her. The reveal that she’s actually experienced with casual relationships isn’t surprising, given her work for a mob-connected organization. Unfortunately, her character exists solely to demonstrate Tony’s skill as a seducer and doesn’t contribute to the story in any meaningful way.
Mandee
“University” (Season 3, Episode 6)

HBO
The episode ‘University’ is considered one of the show’s most intense and violent, largely due to Ralph’s actions. He tragically kills his girlfriend, Tracee, after she challenges his ego, and nearly blinds Georgie while foolishly trying to recreate a fight scene from the movie Gladiator. Apparently, Tony could have intervened in the Georgie incident, but he was preoccupied with a private encounter with Mandee in the VIP room.
Tony’s new companion is completely silent, making it difficult to understand her motives or role. This highlights Tony’s lack of oversight regarding the well-being of those working for the DiMeo crime family. Meanwhile, Georgie reveals a disturbing practice: new dancers hoping to work in the VIP room are required to pay him $50 upfront, with further sexual favors expected later.
Gloria Trillo
“He Is Risen” (Season 3, Episode 8)

HBO
David Chase doesn’t talk about it, but Gloria Trillo (played by Annabella Sciorra) seems to echo the character of Miss Forrest from the movie Fatal Attraction. Tony first encounters Gloria, a heartbroken car saleswoman, while waiting for his therapy session with Dr. Melfi. He pursues her, and they begin an affair. However, Gloria quickly becomes a problem, as she’s possessive and difficult to shake off. Tony is forced to use increasingly harsh methods to end the relationship and scare her away.
The Gloria Trillo storyline is a sharp critique of cheating and materialism. The character of Gloria highlights that love needs mutual affection to thrive. This affair acts as a potential turning point for Carmela, who was recently encouraged to leave Tony, and a form of karmic justice for Tony himself. While Gloria’s actions offer Tony a taste of his own medicine for his infidelities, the effect is short-lived, as he quickly returns to his old habits after the situation is resolved.
Miss Reykjavik
“Everybody Hurt” (Season 4, Episode 6)

HBO
In the early episodes of Season 4, the New Jersey mob is shown at a wild party with some flight attendants from Iceland. Tony begins a brief affair with one of them, known as Miss Reykjavik. Later, when Artie gets beaten up while trying to collect money from Jean-Philippe, he calls Tony for help. During the call, Tony is seen with Miss Reykjavik, making it clear their relationship is going well.
Miss Reykjavik was a memorable, carefree character, and it’s a shame she didn’t appear in many episodes. Artie’s interruptions ruined a potentially sweet moment. It’s also clever how she’s introduced right after Hugh shares his story about getting sick in Iceland – that shows how well-written The Sopranos was.
Valentina La Paz
“Mergers and Acquisitions” (Season 4, Episode 8)

HBO
Tony wasn’t much of an athlete, but he was always good at attracting other people’s girlfriends. He becomes fixated on Valentina (Leslie Bega), who is dating Ralph Cifaretto, and makes a move to win her over. This decision ultimately causes him regret. Carmela discovers a nail belonging to Valentina in Tony’s pocket, leading to a fight. In retaliation, she finds Tony’s hidden cash and takes some for herself, eventually filing for divorce.
Valentina seems more emotionally balanced than Tony’s other affairs, and there’s a real possibility he could eventually marry her. After Carmela leaves him, Tony continues seeing Valentina, and she truly seems to be in love with him, even suggesting a trip to Antigua. She’s clearly hoping for a long-term relationship, but Tony is hesitant. However, when Valentina is injured in a fire, Tony uses it as an excuse to end things with her completely.
Svetlana Kirilenko
“The Strong Silent Type” (Season 4, Episode 10)

HBO
Svetlana, a relative of Tony’s former mistress, is hired as a live-in nurse for Livia and later cares for Junior. She had a leg amputated as a child due to osteosarcoma. Although she appears in Season 2, Tony doesn’t begin an affair with her right away. When Irina discovers their relationship, she becomes furious and reveals Tony’s infidelity to Carmela.
Svetlana is instantly likable – she enjoys life, works diligently, and demands respect. When Tony’s sister, Janice, disrespectfully takes her prosthetic leg during a fight, Svetlana doesn’t hesitate to involve the Russian mafia. She’s also refreshingly honest about relationships, quickly ending her affair with Tony and challenging his behavior. Unlike typical mistresses, Svetlana and Tony have stimulating conversations and she consistently proves to be the more insightful of the two.
The problem with many Americans is their assumption that things will always go well. Unlike much of the world, which anticipates difficulties – and is usually proven right – you expect everything to be okay.
A Weightlifter and a Preschool Assistant
“Whitecaps” (Season 4, Episode 13)

HBO
The episode “Whitecaps” really highlighted how much trouble Tony and Carmela were having in their relationship, solidifying them as one of television’s most troubled couples. Before this, Tony surprised Carmela by showing her a beach house and promising to buy it for her. They shared a kiss and fondly remembered happier times.
Shortly after, Tony’s mistress, Irina, calls Carmela and admits to the affair, causing a major uproar. During the conversation, Carmela reveals Tony has been seeing other women, mentioning “a weightlifter and a preschool teacher.” The preschool teacher fits the type of woman Tony typically has affairs with. While a weightlifter seems unusual, it’s hinted at by a photo of boxing champion Rocky Marciano visible in Tony’s house, suggesting a preference for strong, athletic types.
Carmela’s reaction highlights how women in the mafia world often cope with their husbands’ affairs. While she’s generally accepted Tony’s infidelity, learning so many details is overwhelming. She always hoped to keep his outside relationships separate from their family life, and it’s natural that she’s now upset and confused.
