The reign of Paul Atreides has begun.
I’m so excited for the next Dune film! Timothée Chalamet is back as Paul Atreides, and it looks like we’ll see him truly come into his own, becoming Emperor. It’s a pretty dark path though – he has to avenge his father and family after the Harkonnens destroy everything. But the really heavy part is, he’s seen the future, and becoming Emperor kicks off a massive war that will cost billions of lives. It’s all tied to this thing called the Water of Life, which gives him these visions, and honestly, it’s a lot to take in!
Warner Bros. just dropped the first trailer for Dune: Part Three, the final installment in Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi series. The movie is based on the second book in Frank Herbert’s classic Dune novels, Dune Messiah, and fans have been predicting it will feel different from the previous two films. Watch the trailer below!
The trailer for Dune: Part Three quickly shows the fallout from Paul’s decisions in the previous movie, where Chani rides off into the desert as a massive war erupts. The new film seems to begin with Paul and Chani together again, even discussing their future family. However, this peaceful moment doesn’t last, as the trailer cuts to scenes of intense battles on different planets, showing the destruction caused by the Fremen and their war efforts, led by both Stilgar and Paul.
The upcoming film introduces several new characters, and we’re getting our first glimpses of them. Robert Pattinson plays Scytale, a new villain with a bleached blonde look and a menacing presence. Anya Taylor-Joy returns as Alia Atreides, Paul’s sister, after a short appearance in the previous movie. While her role was small in Part 2, Alia is expected to be a much more important character this time around.
The third Dune movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18th, and it’s expected to compete with Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday. There was some thought that one of the films might be delayed, but reports indicate Dune: Part 3 will have exclusive access to IMAX theaters for its opening weekend, meaning Warner Bros. is likely to stick with its current release date.
The cast of Dune: Part Three will feature returning favorites Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and Jason Momoa. Joining the world of Dune are new actors Isaach de Bankolé, playing one of Paul’s former allies, and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke as Leto II and Ghanima Atreides, the twin children of Paul and Chani.

Okay, so for the next installment, they’ve got Linus Sandgren taking over as the cinematographer – he’s incredibly talented, but he’s stepping into some big shoes, as the first two films were shot by the amazing Greig Fraser. Thankfully, Hans Zimmer is back to do the music, which is huge news – his scores really made those first films what they were!
During the trailer’s debut, director Villeneuve explained that Dune: Part Three will feel very different from the previous two films, and that’s apparent even in this first glimpse. While Dune Messiah is primarily a story of political maneuvering and internal conflicts, Villeneuve has chosen to broaden the scope of the novel. He aims to fully portray the tragic arc of Paul Atreides and potentially lay the groundwork for future stories within the Dune universe, extending beyond the events of Herbert’s second book.
