Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has introduced a new, intriguing monster, but as we learn more about Titan X, its purpose within the Monsterverse is becoming less clear. The second season continues the story right where the first one left off—avoiding the typical time jump seen in many streaming shows—and features most of the original cast. However, the biggest new element isn’t a human character, but a powerful Titan that essentially functions as a god within the Monsterverse.
The first episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 revealed a giant, tentacled monster – Titan X – that can travel on both land and in the ocean. This powerful creature, radiating energy and armed with spikes and sharp teeth, has been presented as a major threat to Kong, Godzilla, and the Monarch organization. But as we’ve seen more of Titan X, it’s becoming clear that it might not be a simple villain.
Titan X Could Be A Protector Titan

Apple TV
The Monsterverse features different types of Titans, each with a specific role on Earth. Titans like Ghidorah, Scylla, and Tiamat are classified as Destroyers, meaning they are hostile towards the world and humans. Others, such as Godzilla, Kong, and Behemoth, are Protectors, working to maintain balance and heal the natural world.
The first episode revealed Titan X by having it accidentally kill Director Verdugo with its tentacle. Kong immediately went after it after it escaped from Axis Mundi, showing how dangerous it is. Interestingly, the people of Santa Soledad, who Lee Shaw and the Randas encountered in the 1950s, actually worship Titan X – they call it Co’cai – because its presence makes their waters richer with fish and other valuable resources.
All Titans create new life through their radiation, but Titan X is unique because it hasn’t shown any desire to destroy things. It only attacks when provoked – specifically, after Lee kicks a Scarab, or when the Scarabs or Titan X itself are threatened. This behavior suggests Titan X is actually a protective force, rather than a destructive one, which is different from how it’s been portrayed in the show’s marketing and in the current season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Titan X Displays Several Connections To Mothra

Legendary
Mothra is often considered the most dedicated protector titan on Earth, constantly dying and being reborn to safeguard the balance of nature. Titan X shares many traits with Mothra, strongly suggesting it also serves a protective role. The most notable connection is Titan X’s relationship with the Scarabs, which highlights its dedication to preservation.
The Scarabs were first thought to be related to Titan X, but they seem to be a separate species that benefits from a close relationship with the tentacled Titan. This is similar to how remoras attach to sharks and clean them. Mothra’s special connection with Godzilla is so significant it’s earned her the title “Queen of the Monsters.” Although Titan X’s relationship with the Scarabs isn’t as extensive, it hints that this Titan may not be focused on causing destruction.
As a huge monster movie fan, one thing that really struck me about Titan X is its call – it sounds remarkably like Mothra’s! It might be mimicking her, but it could also mean they’re biologically connected, like they share a similar ‘voice’ on a fundamental level. And the way Titan X changes color – glowing red when angry and a calm blue when relaxed – is so similar to what we see with larval Mothra in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It’s like a clear visual echo, hinting at a deeper connection between these two Titans.
Godzilla And Kong’s Beef With Titan X Could Be Territorial in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’

Legendary
Okay, so if Titan X really is one of the ancient protectors, it makes you wonder why we’re seeing it brawl with Godzilla and Kong in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The simplest explanation? It’s just wandered into their turf. The Monsterverse has made it pretty clear where everyone stands – Godzilla rules the surface, Kong has Skull Island and the Hollow Earth. If Titan X broke out of Axis Mundi, that’s a serious breach of the established order, and honestly, Godzilla and Kong are probably just reacting to a potential threat. It makes sense, given what we know about their protective instincts.

Throughout the Monsterverse stories, Godzilla has sometimes taken control, forcing other Titans to obey him without destroying them. This might be what happens with Titan X – it could survive a fight with Godzilla and Kong at the end of the next season. Instead of being eliminated, it could simply go back into hiding, and Monarch, the research organization, would know exactly where it is.
Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set before the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. By this time, the Monarch organization has located over 17 Titans and established monitoring posts near them worldwide. The mysterious Titan X might actually be one of the Titans already glimpsed in previous Monsterverse films, potentially known as Titanus Co’cai and located in either Axis Mundi or the ocean. While the season will reveal the truth, current evidence suggests Titan X isn’t the incredibly destructive force it’s been portrayed as.
