I’m hearing some exciting news about the potential Minecraft Movie 2! Apparently, they’re in talks with a really popular actor to play the villain, and people think the casting choice might give us a hint about who he’ll be playing. The first Minecraft Movie was a huge hit last year, raking in nearly a billion dollars worldwide – a lot of that buzz came from all the funny memes it generated. That film focused on the Nether and its villain, Malgosha, the Piglin Queen. She wanted to take over the Overworld because she felt punished for being creative – she used to love dancing, but others made fun of her for it.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, actor Matt Berry, known for his role in The IT Crowd, is being considered to play a villain in the upcoming Minecraft Movie 2. Production is slated to begin in April, with the film expected to release on July 23, 2027. This potential casting nods to the success of the first Minecraft movie in 2025 and may hint at which famous character from the game Berry could portray.
Many fans will recall Berry’s role as Nitwit in A Minecraft Movie – the villager who unexpectedly appeared in the real world and fell for Vice Principal Marlene, played by Jennifer Collidge. Berry’s voice was only featured at the very end when Nitwit learned to speak English and proposed to Marlene, wrapping up the movie’s bizarre but heartwarming love story.

Berry’s brief appearance in the film was a nice nod to his initial plans for a much bigger part. He was originally going to be the main character, Steve, in the movie instead of Jack Black. However, scheduling issues caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and his commitments to the final season of the show What We Do in the Shadows, meant he had to drop out and another actor took his place.

I truly believe Lawrence Berry is the perfect actor to play Herobrine in a live-action adaptation! It’s uncanny – he really looks like Jack Black, especially with the facial hair. Plus, they both come from backgrounds in music and comedy. People have even said Berry looks like a slightly evil version of Jack! Knowing he almost landed a role in the first Minecraft movie just makes it even more clear – he is Herobrine.

Herobrine isn’t actually part of the game Minecraft. It’s a popular online story – a creepy legend about a ghostly figure resembling the player character, Steve, with white eyes. The story became well-known early in the game’s history, with many players claiming to have seen Herobrine following, attacking, or destroying their creations.
Okay, so I was getting seriously “Evil Steve” vibes from this British actor they cast, but the official poster totally threw me for a loop! It looks like the Ender Dragon is going to be the big bad in the Minecraft sequel. Makes sense, though – the first movie was all about the Nether, so taking the adventure to The End feels like a natural next step for the crew.
Jared Hess, the director, also told Collider that the team making the sequel has been keen to listen to what fans want, and many have specifically requested they include the Ender Dragon.
Many people asked us to create the movie, and the most common request was to include the Ender Dragon.
Will Matt Berry Actually Play Herobrine in A Minecraft Movie 2?
Some viewers might remember a hint of Herobrine in the movie A Minecraft Movie. There was a scene where everyone appeared to be hallucinating, with purple eyes and taunting young Henry. Notably, Steve’s eyes glowed white instead.
I was so excited when I thought they were hinting at Herobrine’s return! But sadly, Torfi Frans Olafsson, the creative director at Mojang, cleared things up. It wasn’t intentional at all. Apparently, it was just a last-minute problem with the visual effects – all the characters’ eyes were supposed to be purple, and something went wrong!
Because Herobrine is often shown looking like Steve but with glowing eyes, many fans think an actor named Black would be a good choice to play him in a movie. However, since Herobrine’s story isn’t officially part of the game, the filmmakers could create his backstory and decide who plays him however they want.
If the upcoming Minecraft Movie 2 does well and plans for a third movie move ahead, the character Herobrine could be a fitting villain for the finale. Jason Berry’s secret role in the new movie might hint that he’ll play Herobrine, though he could also simply be the voice of the Ender Dragon.
