As a huge DC fan, I’m seriously blown away by the speed DC Studios is moving at! They’re planning a ton of releases in 2026 to really kick off this new DCU. It all starts with Creature Commandos, and then Superman hits theaters – James Gunn is really laying the groundwork for what he’s calling Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. What’s really exciting is that we’re getting two big movies and a major HBO series all pretty close together – it’s going to be an incredible year!
Following the release of its initial (and somewhat controversial) trailer, it’s now confirmed that Lanterns will debut in August. This premiere date marks one of the shortest gaps between releases in the history of the DC franchise.
Over the next four months, three live-action DC Universe projects – Supergirl (June 26), Lanterns (August), and Clayface (October 23) – will be released as part of the first chapter, “Gods and Monsters.” The releases would have been even closer together if Clayface hadn’t been moved from its original September 11th date.
This setup will have audiences experiencing DC stories in a rapid-fire sequence – first in theaters, then as a major HBO series, and quickly back to another film. This makes 2026 a uniquely packed year for the DC universe, with more story content released in a shorter time than ever before.
This is the first time we’ve seen three DC movies connected in the same universe released so close together. While 2023 had Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle, those films were spread out over roughly five months.
DC Studios is planning a steady stream of releases throughout 2026 to keep its universe in the public eye. For dedicated fans, the timing seems deliberate: Supergirl will hit theaters in the summer, followed by the Lanterns series on HBO, and then the mature-themed Clayface just before Halloween.
The schedule feels well-planned and not rushed. Because the release of Clayface was delayed by about six weeks, each project now has more time to develop, while still keeping the overall universe moving forward.
These recent releases position DC Studios for a strong finish in 2026 and create momentum heading into what’s anticipated to be a major year for the DCU in 2027.
Upcoming DCU Projects in 2027 & Beyond
Man of Tomorrow

Following the 2025 film Superman, Man of Tomorrow (simply Man of Tomorrow, not Superman: Man of Tomorrow) is expected to be the biggest movie in the 2027 DC Universe lineup.
James Gunn is directing the new Superman movie, which features an unlikely alliance. Superman, played by David Corenswet, must work with his enemy, Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult), to save the world from a dangerous global crisis.
Lars Eidinger will play Brainiac, a super-smart android, in the next big DC movie, marking a first for the character in DC’s film universe. Filming is planned to start in 2026, and the movie is currently set to release on July 9, 2027. Fans who enjoyed James Gunn’s initial Superman film can look forward to another summer adventure with the character.
Creature Commandos Season 2

The team behind the new DC Universe is already working on the next season. James Gunn recently let fans know that Season 2 is now planned to be released in 2027, after some initial uncertainty about the timing.
If the projected schedule holds, the new season won’t arrive for over two years after Season 1, which debuted in late 2024. Many fans expected a quicker return, as the animated series was created to establish the mood and themes for the DC Universe’s ‘Gods and Monsters’ corner. A character people will be particularly interested in is Rick Flag Sr. (played by Frank Grillo), who also had a significant role in both Superman and Season 2 of Peacemaker.
Blue Beetle

Xolo Maridueña will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes, confirming the character’s place in the new DC Universe. Maridueña mentioned in an interview over a year ago that a release date is currently aimed for 2026.
The upcoming series might continue the story from the end of the Blue Beetle movie, where it was shown that the original Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, is still alive and needs help. It’s currently expected to premiere in 2026, but there haven’t been many recent announcements about its progress within the DC Universe.
Booster Gold

James Gunn has repeatedly said he doesn’t want to hurry the writing process, but the project appears to be entering full pre-production. Kumail Nanjiani is strongly rumored to be cast as Michael Jon Carter.
This character will star in a new live-action series on HBO. David Jenkins is writing the first episode, but there’s no confirmed release date yet. It’s also possible the character might appear in another project before the series begins.
If not, fans might have to wait until the planned Booster Gold TV series, which probably won’t be released until the late 2020s.
Mister Miracle

Okay, so I’m really excited about this new animated series. It’s based on a comic book run – a 12-issue story by Tom King and Mitch Gerads that everyone raved about – and it’s promising to really dive deep into the messed-up, psychological side of the New Gods. It’s not going to be your typical superhero stuff, apparently.
The search for actors to play Scott Free and Big Barda is happening now. James Gunn has also confirmed the show will be part of the official DC Universe storyline, which could pave the way for the introduction of the villain Darkseid in the future.
Considering how far along development is and the animation schedule, a release date in late 2027 or 2028 appears likely.
Jimmy Olsen / Daily Planet TV Show

The new series will follow Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo, as he leads his own investigations, separate from Superman. James Gunn has also clarified that the show was never actually called “DC Crime,” despite earlier reports.
Even though the show’s rumored title isn’t accurate, James Gunn confirmed that most of the other information circulating about it is true. The series, which will star Elizabeth Olsen and is said to feature Gorilla Grodd as the villain, is still being developed, but there are currently no dates for when it might be made or released.
Production is scheduled to start this spring in Atlanta, and the movie could be released sometime in 2027, either before or after the release of Man of Tomorrow.
